Club History

Before 1947 the Carterton Golf Club had been without a satisfactory home for some time, but in 1946 the present property of 120 acres was purchased for $3250 and a start made on laying out an 18-hole course.

BroadbentThe work required to develop the course was carried out almost entirely by voluntary labour. Many tons of stones were carted away, bridges were built, drains installed, and a clubhouse erected. On the opening day of May 31, 1947, the course was officially opened when the president Mr A. Broadbent drove off the first tee of what was at the time a 13-hole course. It was not until 1952 that the full 18 holes were brought into play.

In those days the greens were fenced off as the fairways were mown by a flock of sheep. Horse drawn mowers came in later and a new rule added to allow a free drop from hoof marks.

The course as it is today is hardly recognisable from fifty years ago.

With all the attractive flower beds and its water-fowl ponds, plus new hazards it offers one of the most attractive settings fro golf in the region.

The clubhouse too has gone through major transformation. The 1947 model was a basic structure built out of the timber taken from an old barn on the property, whereas today's members enjoy the comfort of a modern building with a wide range of amenities.

Many improvements have been made over the past half century and Carterton now has a layout as good as any where in the Wellington area.
