SHOOTOUT FINAL
Congratulations to Lynn Evans who has won the C & F Industries Shootout Trophy for 2009. Lynn and Ian Gordon came down the 18th and it was Lynn with a solid par who came out the victor. Ian was looking to secure his second Shootout win but it was not to be. Congratulations to all the players that qualified. The spectators and supporters saw some great golf in difficult and at times trying conditions. As always there were some hard luck stories to tell, from Duncan Pincock doing his best lumberjack impersonations in the early holes through to Lynn Evans and his moral dilemma on the last! Many thanks to our sponsors, Hammer Hardware and All Teed Up. Their support is sincerely appreciated. Also thanks to those who helped on the day, especially, Allan Heffer the controller and the markers Russ Sadler, Max Baylis and Pat Carew.

SATURDAY November 14th
The Birchall Reardon Mixed Open Foursomes were played on Saturday and this years winners made no competition of things as they won both the Nett and Gross trophies, so congratulations to Mark Graham and Pam Fitzgerald on their 82 off the stick and nett 67. The rest of the nett scores were not far behind as Russ Morgan and Val Willis were next on nett 68 and then the parings of Graham Hutchby/Lyn Andrews and John Lett/Miria Te Tau on nett 69. Nett 71 for Larry Gray/Kate Keen followed and then the nett 72s of Nigel Bailey/Katie Smart and Mike Newport/Ngaire Taylor.
Those men without a partner for the Birchall/Reardon played a stroke round also and things were VERY tight here. Sharing first place were Chris Ranish, David Wills and Whana Rohe on nett 66 from Lyn Evans and Ian Gordon on nett 68 (a foretelling of the final hole of the Shootout!) and Toby Hempleman on nett 69. Twos were popular as both the teams of Mark Graham/Pam Fitzgerald and Russ Morgan/Val Willis picked up a couple each whilst Toby Hempleman, Jim Harris, Stu Ingham and David Wills picked up one each. New World Ladies nearest on 15 went to Beth Gordon, and the Royal Oak on #15 for men to John Lett. Publishers for the men went to Toby Hempleman, the Snake Eyes on #10 to Trevor Clayton and All Teed Up on #16 to Sheridan Rangihuna.
VETERANS, Tuesday 10 November.
The final of the Captain’s Trophy (4bbb match play on handicap) was played last Tuesday. After an even start Bob Walker and Frank Delaney combined too well to emerge as clear winners over the pairing of John Lett and Ray White. The competition for the day was a stroke round & the leading scores were well bunched. Top of the score-sheet was Mike Holt with a well-compiled 67. Close behind were Cyril Burling with 68, Ken Prince and Frank Delaney both with 69, then Neil Stewart with a 70. The next seven on a cluttered leader-board all scored net 71 – George Rink, Martin Sears, Jim Harris, Ray White, Bob Walker, Toby Hempleman & Hugh Rolls. And the tail-enders, with 72 apiece, were Max Baylis and John Braiden. While he didn’t get on the prize-winning scoresheet, Ralph Day was the only one to have 5 of the 6 randomly selected numbers in the Vet’s Glotto game. That earned him a tidy wee cash sum. (We like to report such events given that Vets are occasionally prone to forgetfulness when it comes to things like reporting good fortune to their spouse)

SATURDAY November 7th
Captains v Presidents on Saturday, not quite the Ryder cup but still a fun trophy contested each year at the club. This year the Captains team had the edge over the Presidents with their 33.83 average mildly better than the 33.62 of the Presidents. The Ladies were headed by Miria Te Tau but only by countback from Susan Slaughter both on 41 stablefords. Katie Smart was next with 39 before the 37s of Pauline Craig, Sue Braiden and Kate Keen and the 36 of Marge Robson.
Men’s 0-17 saw Cameron Coutts return to form with 42 points to edge Mike Newport and David Wills both on 41. 39 for Craig Wilson and Tim Ross, and 37 for Ray Clarke and Chris Ranish. In the 18 and over group the same score of 42 was enough for Ray Morris to take things from Trevor Clayton on 41 then Ian Gordon and Mike Holt on 40 points. Ralph Day, Ian Brinkworth and Frank Delaney rounded things out with 39 each.
Twos were popular being scored by Susan Slaughter, David Sadler, David Wills, Mike Holt, Craig Wilson, Ngaire Taylor and Anne Brewer. Snake Eyes went to Frank Delaney, All Teed Up to Nigel Bailey, the Royal Oak to Barry Bentley, New World to Emma Morris and the Publishers to Mike Holt and Katie Smart for Men and Ladies respectively.
Veterans, Tuesday 3 November.
At last! A fine Tuesday, a beautifully manicured course, and about 40 vets looking for some golfing action. Stableford was the name of the game and, no surprises, Ash Braggins continued his good form to post a winning score of 42 points. Following closely behind were Mike Holt and John Braiden with 41, Ian Brinkworth & Jim Harris on 40, then Bob Walker, Martin Sears and George Rink all on 38. Toby Hempleman, chimed in with 37, the same score as Joe Skillcorn (who is coming back to form now that he has re-acclimatised). Followed by Ray White, Frank Delaney, Jim Douglas, Ken Prince & Nigel Graham, who all scored 36. And finally Ralph Day’s 35 was enough, by lot, to earn him the last pack of sausages. Closest to the pin was Max Baylis on # 12 and Bob Walker on #16. Play of the day: One of the group playing in Trevor Clayton’s four recounted an “interesting” start TC had at the 5th hole. His tee shot sailed far left over the fence – out of bounds. Playing 3 off the tee, he whacked the ball straight into the pond. So he drops the ball out & is now playing 5. Whack. Straight back into the pond again! So after retrieving the errant ball and he is now playing his 7th shot, having advanced about 60 metres from the tee! Not sure what Trev ended up with on #5 but we do know he didn’t score any stableford points.
Women’s, Wednesday 3 November.
The Ladies played a stroke round last week and coming in with Nett 70 to win was Jenny Duggan. 72s for Margaret Thompson and Ngaire Taylor were next followed by the 73 of June Prince and then the 74s of Janet Pincock, Gay Martin and Beth Parker. Nearest the pin for 3 on #18 went to Sue Ross and no twos were scored so a draw was made, congratulations to Gay Martin, Sue Ross, Margaret Thompson, Janet Pincock, Chris Taylor, Alison Bodle and Corrie Van Zanten.

SATURDAY October 31st
One of the Carterton Men’s premier Trophies was decided no Saturday as the last two standing in the Coyle Cup squared off against each other. This match play trophy, played on handicap, is competed for over the course of the season in a series of elimination rounds which this year, saw Russ Sadler squaring off against John Lett. Congratulations to this years winner, Russ Sadler !
The rest of the men’s field were playing a Stroke round and a good turn out also saw some good scoring. In the men’s 0-18 group, Craig Wilson topped the pile from Larry Gray but only on countback as both scored nett 68. Nett 69s followed for David Sadler and Les Mason, nett 70 for Lyn Evans and nett 72s for Mark Graham and Nigel Bailey. The 19 and over group’s clear winner was Ash Braggins on nett 66, two shots clear of Ian Gordon and Ken Prince both coming in with nett 68. Whana Rohe was next on nett 70 before the nett 71s of Les Cherry and Barry Hare and the nett 74 of Bill Shakespeare. The Publishers this week went to Ken Prince ,the Royal Oak to Max Baylis, Snake Eyes to Barry Hare and the All Teed Up to Larry Gray. Twos were popular as well being scored by Stu Ingham, Colin Larsen, Dave Sadler, Jay Hodgkiss, Pat Carew, Katie Smart, Jenny Taylor and Lyn Andrews grabbed a couple!
The ladies were playing for the Brushden Trophy, a 4 ball best ball competition, which was a tightly fought contest this year with the trophy for this year being shared! Congratulations to the teams of Yvonne Baylis and Lyn Andrews, and Nadine Jansen and Miria Te Tau who’s 43 points earned them top placings. Katie Smart and Kate Keen were next on 41 points and then the 40s of Marge Robson and Corrie Van Zanten and also Gay Martin and Shirley Carew. Ngaire Taylor won the All Teed Up, Barbara Birchall the New World nearest the pin and the Publishers went to Nadine Jansen.
WOMENS October 28th
Last Wednesday, the girls had the annual Captain vs. Secretary stableford competition with this year’s winners being the Secretaries team who’s 358 points edged the 3523 of the Captains team. Continuing the tight finishes of this report, Nadine Jansen edged Vicki Bain on countback to win on the day, both scoring 38 points. Sue Braiden and Jenny Duggan were next on 37 points, Shirley Carew on 36, Ngaire Taylor on 35 and Sue Ross on 33 points. Vicki Bain and Shirley Carew scored the twos on the day whilst Vicki also won the New World nearest the pin and the All Teed Up went to Marge Robson.

SATURDAY Bucket Tournament
Not the turnout normally associated with this popular tournament but a great day weatherwise meant that the 63 there had a great day’s golf. Can’t understand why a bucket sized hole is supposed to make things easier but obviously it works for some people as some extraordinary totals were returned by a couple of the men. Best of those was in Men’s Group 2 where Les Cherry came in with no less than 50 Stablefords to leave Ian Gordon and Richard Cohen scratching their heads on a mere 47 stablefords. In Men’s Group 1, Mike Newport’s 49 was also raised issues of burglary as he outstripped the 46 point totals of Mark Graham and Barry Bentley. Women’s Group 1 was lead in by Jeanne Taylor on 44 points ahead of young Katie Smart on 42 and Corrie Van Zanten on 38. The highlight here was Katie scoring an Eagle 2 on #5, shame there are no payouts for 2’s with bucket sized holes! Women’s Group 2 had a clear winner in starter Anne Brewer who’s 43 points was well clear of a trio on 38 being Sue Braiden, Helen Woodcock and Robyn Cohen. Bevan Lambess won the All Teed Up on #16 and Mike Holt the Snake Eyes on #10, Mark Graham grabbed the Royal Oak on #15, the Publisher’s on #6 for the Ladies went to Jeanne Taylor and for the Men to Eddie Birchall, (nice to see you out there again Eddie!).
PUBLISHER’S ARMS LABOUR DAY Mini Tournament
Another wonderful day for golf, possibly even better than that on Saturday saw a small field participate in a Stableford competition, kindly sponsored by Lyall and his team. The Ladies were lead in by Robyn Cohen on 42 points, (she tells me she played the best she has in a couple of years!), well clear of Sue Braiden on 37 and Anne Brewer on 34. Mike Newport continued his good form from Saturday to register 44 points in winning Men’s group 1 ahead of David Wills on 41 and Lyall Humphries on 40. Men’s group 2 completed the double for the Cohens as Rex’s 42 was good enough to edge Ian Brinkworth on 41 and George Rink on 40 points. David Wills grabbed nearest the pin on both #6 and #12 while Mike Holt was nearest on #9 and Ian Brinkworth on #15. Katie Smart made up for missing out on a two for her Eagle on Saturday by getting one on Monday but was outshone by David Wills who converted both his nearest the pins in to Twos, Ian Brinkworth converted his also and they were joined by John Lett and Frank Delaney who also potted one each.
VETERANS Tuesday 20 Oct
The weather on Tuesday last week was judged sufficiently bad for the Vets to cancel their usually well attended Tuesday round. However better conditions prevailed on Thursday, which enabled a group of about half the usual numbers to get their weekly golf fix. Nigel Graham has been in good form of late (including his progression through to the Junior B finals) so it was no real surprise when he finished a clear-cut winner with 42 stableford points. Next best with 39 was John Braiden, followed by three of the regular good-score golfers – Jim Douglas, Keith Williams and Bob Walker - all on 38 points.

CLUB CHAMPIONS 2009
This weekend had Women and Men completing their battle for the distinction of best in their grade for 2009. The weather may not have been the best but some great golf was played over both days as the semis were completed on Saturday and the final over 36 holes on Sunday. Thanks to all those members who helped out in ensuring things ran smoothly for those competing, especially to Stu Ingham for standing in as Club Captain! Congratulations to all the winners and well done also to the Runner Ups.

SATURDAY
Club Champs Semis were played as mentioned earlier and Frank Delaney may have peaked too early as he posted an astonishing nett 58 to win Men's Group 2. Ian Gordon was next, a mere 9 shots behind on nett 67 with Joe Eru following on nett 69, Ian Brinkworth on nett 70 and Graham Hutchby on nett 71. In Men's Group 1 Jim Harris continued his good form with a nett 65 to edge Craig Wilson on nett 66. Max Baylis was next with nett 69, Lance Sayer with nett 71 and Api Rangihuna on nett 72. Api also grabbed the All Teed Up, Snake Eyes went to Richard Chapman, the Publishers to Craig Wilson and Ian Gordon won the Royal Oak. Lance Sayer had the most notable Two scoring it on #5 whilst others were scored by Russ Morgan, Graham Hutchby, Craig Wilson, Barry Bentley, Ian Gordon ad Lesley Sadler.
The Ladies were playing a Stableford round and Sue Braiden cleared away from the field with 41 points. Nadine Jansen was next on 37, Janet Pincock on 36, Kate Keen on 35 and Gay Martin on 34. Though not featuring in the placings for the day, Lesley Sadler more than made up for it, not only scoring a two but also winning the All Teed Up and New World nearest he pin.
WOMEN Wednesday 14 Oct
Stableford again for the Ladies but this time South African style as they paired off last Wednesday. The winning pair on 81 points were Sue Ross and Shirley Carew, well ahead of the 2nd pairing with 75 points going to Vicki Bain and Margaret Bradshaw. Corrie Van Zanten and Suzanne Fuller scored 69 points and the final placing went to Sue Braiden and Marge Robson with 65. Twos went to Barbara Birchall, Corrie Van Zanten and Margaret Bradshaw whilst Val Willis won the All Teed Up and New World nearest the pin was not struck.
VETERANS Tuesday 13 Oct
The vets returned to Carterton on Tuesday 13th & played a stableford round in windy, though mild & sunny, conditions. There seemed to be a bigger than usual prize list, maybe brought about by the very good turnout (boosted by 3 ladies, & nice it was to have them join us too). Martin Sears played his cards right to return the top score of 43 points. Next on 42 was honorary vet Jason Walker whose par round of 71 comprised 12 pars, 3 birdies and 3 bogeys (including the par 4 14th, where he was 3 off the tee after his initial tee shot sailed away over the barberry hedge). The next three, all with 41, were Chris Slaughter, Lesley Sadler and Jim Harris. With 39 were Toby Hempleman, Ray White, Chris Williams and Mike Newport (welcome back the intrepid traveller). Then on 38 were Cyril Burling, Max Baylis, Piri Gillies and Pat Carew. On 36, Bob Walker and Corrie van Zanten. And finally with 35 points were Wal McKnight, Russ Sadler and Garry Smith. Corrie van Zanten rounded off a good day by being closest to the pin on the par 3 twelfth.
Oct 11
SATURDAY
Less than ideal weather conditions last Saturday ensured the field was small for those men who turned up for a Stroke round. Larry Gray edged Ray Clarke on countback in the end as both posted nett 69 scores. Lance Sayer, Karl Churchward and Brayden Mazey all played to their handicaps scoring nett 71, Barry Bentley followed with nett 72 and Nigel Bailey with nett 73. Dean Schaef grabbed the Publishers on #6, Karl Churchward the Royal Oak nearest the Pin, Brayden Mazey the All Teed Up whilst the Snake Eyes was not struck. Karl had a nice day with the 2s also as he grabbed a couple whilst Nigel Bailey and W Armstrong grabbed one each.
The Ladies were playing Stableford in the same conditions and scores were tight there as Margaret Bradshaw came in on top with 34 Stablefords ahead of Corrie Van Zanten and Shirley Carew, both scoring 33 points. Sue Braiden was next on 30, Chris Taylor and Val Edwards on 29 and Gay Martin with 28 points rounded out the winners. New World nearest the pin went to Chris Taylor and the All Teed Up went to Corrie Van Zanten.
WOMEN Wednesday 7 Oct
LGU, Amy Goodin Salver and the Midweek Cup for the girls last week and clear winner on the day with nett 69 was Corrie Van Zanten. 3 points adrift on nett 72 was Val Willis with Shirley Carew not far behind on nett 73, before the nett 75s of Barbara Birchall, Gay Martin and Lesley Sadler whilst Vicki Bain rounded out the table with nett 76. Vicki Bain and Corrie Van Zanten had the only Twos, All Teed Up went to Sue Braiden and the New World nearest the pin went to Bev Tregurtha.
VETERANS Tuesday 6 Oct
The Carterton Vets are becoming a proper little bunch of gadabouts. A week after their trip to Manor Park, a good sized group of 22 went north to do battle with Linton Camp’s Vet golfers. At stake was the Don Louis trophy, won by Carterton when the two clubs met at our course last April. On that occasion Carterton scored an average of 37 points while Linton Camp managed only 34 (average Stableford score from the aggregate of all the scorecards.) In an odd display of consistency, Linton repeated their April effort, again recording an average of 34 points. However that was good enough to win back the trophy as Carterton could only manage an average of 32. Details of individual scores are a bit sketchy. However the best return for Carterton was reported to be the redoubtable Max Baylis with 39 points, followed by Bill Shakespeare with 37. Good to see Bill get some of the goodies. He’s usually too busy organising trips like this to play pay-back golf as well!
Oct 4
SATURDAY
A PAR round for most the men last Saturday as hose who qualified for the Club Champ finals got their first rounds under way. Some good scoring in both divisions with the highlight being Duncan Pincock in the 16 and over group coming in with a score of 6up to edge Richard Chapman on 5up. Karl Churchward and Ian Brinkworth were next with +3 before a trio on 2up filled out the minor placings being Larry Gray, Keith Williams and Joe Eru. In the 0-15 division Greg Martin led the field in with 4up ahead of Lyn Evans on 3up, Ross Collings on 2up and Matt Harvey on 1up. Minor placings here all went to square scores and were achieved by Les Mason, Steve Larsen and Bevan Lambess. Ross Collings collected the Publishers nearest the pin on#6 and the Snake Eyes went to Lyn Evan whilst neither the All Teed Up or Royal Oak prizes went on Saturday. Twos were also popular with Ross Collings grabbing a couple and then singles going to Lyn Andrews, Chris Ranish, Stu Ingham, Shirley Carew, Jason Walker, Chris Connor, Frank Delaney, Les Mason, Ray Clarke and May Baylis.
The Ladies enjoyed a Stableford round and a tightly fought contest saw Yvonne Baylis edge Caral Rink on countback both with 38 Stablefords. Marg Robson was next on 35 points, Flo Watkins on 34 and then the 33s of Kate Keen and Pam Williams. New World nearest the pin went to Pauline Craig, the All Teed Up to Marg Robson and the Publishers no #6 to Lyn Andrews.
WOMEN Wednesday 30 Sept
For a change last Wednesday the girls played a 3 person combined Stableford competition and the run away winners on 115 points was the team comprising Margaret Bradshaw, Bernice Parker and Suzanne Fuller. Closer results for the next teams with 107 to the team of Flo Watkins, Alison Bodle and Mary Edwards, 106 to the tam of Margaret Thompson, Barbara Birchall and Lesley Sadler and 105 to the team of Vicki Bain, June Prince and Sue Braiden. Pam Fitzgerald and Barbara Birchall scored the only twos, the All Teed Up went to Marg Robson and the New World nearest the pin went to Bernice Parker.
VETERANS Tuesday 29 Sept
The vets split into two groups this week with about 20 heading off to Manor Park to join their Vets in a round, while about a dozen others endured a “disturbed nor-westerly air stream” to complete a Stableford round at Carterton.
Recent flooding made for heavy underfoot conditions at Manor Park but fortunately the golf was completed before any steady rain returned. Carterton figured well in results. Martin Sears combined with a Manor Park partner to produce a winning top score of 73 points. In second place was the pairing of Ken Prince and Bob Walker with 72 points. (Ken stamped his liking for this course by also winning nearest the pin) The reports coming back on the rest of the results were a bit hazy but Bob did say that our folk won a reasonable share of both the golf & the raffles! All in all, an enjoyable day’s outing.
Meanwhile, those who stayed home played a Stableford round. The gusty wind had little effect on Chris Slaughter who returned a clear cut winning score of 45 points. Next was Tim Carr with 38, followed by three self-proclaimed `honest golfers’– Bill Armstrong, Neil Stewart and Jack Jones – all with 35 points.
Next week, the Vets are scheduled to make their annual visit to Linton Camp.
Sept 27
SATURDAY
The Men played for the Alex McPhee Trophy on Saturday and a closely fought thing it was, even though the scoring was somewhat subdued. The winner for 2009 was Karl Churchward on points, so congratulations to Karl! In Men's group 1, John Lett won on countback from Craig Wilson and Nigel Bailey, all scoring 38 points while Mike Newport was next on 37, Brayden Mazey and Pat Carew on 36 and Ray Clarke grabbed the last prize on 35 points. Karl led the group 2 men in with his 39 points from Duncan Pincock on 38 then Frank Delaney, Dean Schaef and Colin Larsen all on 36 points. Wal McKnight and Max Baylis rounded out the placings with their 35 stablefords. The Publishers went to Lyn Evans, the Royal Oak to Jason Walker, All Teed Up to Lance Sayer and the Snake Eyes went to John Braiden. Only the three 2s so nice collects for Jason Walker, John Lett and Wayne Taylor.
SUNDAY
With the South Wairarapa Workingmen's cub hosting some visitors from Petone there was a good turnout for Sunday's stableford round and Lyn Evans made the most of it winning with 41 stablefords. Graham Hutchby and David Wills were next on 40 points followed by John Lett on 38 and then the 36s of Hugh Rolls, John Braiden and Steve Larsen. Just the three twos again going to Steve Larsen, Graham Hutchby and Allan Heffer.
VETERANS Tuesday 22 Sept
A field of 32 veterans took to the fairways this week in a Stapleford Competition while the quarter finals of the Captain’s Trophy also took place. Conditions were fine but blustery and some good scores were achieved. No wonder Frank Delaney and Bob Walker won their Trophy match – they were first and second in the Stableford Competition with 44 and 43 points respectively. Other Trophy winners were Pat Carew with Ron Lukies and Trevor Clayton with Geoff Rolls. A group on 41 points came next, Keith Williams,Vic Domanski and Chris Connor followed by Jim Harris, John Braiden, Bill Shakespeare and Piri Gillies all on 40 points.
A reminder that next week the Veterans are at Manor Park, meanwhile both men and ladies are welcome to join us in the Veterans Group on Tuesdays at 9am for a 9.30 shotgun start.
Sept 20
SATURDAY
The last day of Club Champs qualifying for the Men on Saturday and some of them obviously knew it as its not often that nett 3 under misses out on a prize but that's how things panned out in the 17 and over group! Keith Williams set the tone with his nett 62, closely followed by Ash Braggins on nett 63 and then the nett 65s of Russ Sadler and Vic Domanski. Toby Hempleman was next on nett 66, George Rink and Chris Connor followed with nett 67 before Frank Delaney and Duncan Pincock grabbed the last two placings with their nett 68s meaning poor Bill Shakespeare missed out! Things were even tighter in the 0-16 group though the scores were not quite as low as nett 68 was good enough for top spot here and was shared by Eric Collings, Russ Morgan, Nigel Tomlin and Jim Harris. Pat Carew was next on nett 69 and then the final 3 placings went to nett 70 scored by Jason Walker, Brayden Mazey and Chris Ranish. George Rink nabbed the Publishers and Dean Schaef the Royal Oak nearest the pin prizes whilst the All Teed Up went to Wayne Taylor and Bill Shakespeare did not go home empty handed as he collected the Snake Eyes. A few twos around as well being picked up by Yvonne Baylis, Sue Fuller, Nigel Bain, Pat Carew, Dean Schaef and David Sadler.
The Ladies were also playing Club Champs qualifying and Lisa Harkness with nett 66 and Lesley Sadler with nett 68 provided the highlights. Jeanne Taylor was next with nett 70, Shirley Carew, Katie Smart and Caral Rink followed with nett 71 and the nett 72s of Flo Watkins, Suzanne Fuller and Sue Braiden, rounded out the scoring. New World nearest the pin went to Flo Watkins and the All Teed Up to Katie Smart.
SUNDAY
Too good a day to stay inside on Sunday as well, and with the pressure of Club Champ qualifying gone, a PAR round proved just the tonic for Ian Gordon as he blitzed the course to finish with 8up! John Lett would have been happy with his 4up until then but then was only good enough for second and even third place was shared by three all with 3up being Steve Larsen, George Rink and Russ Morgan.
WOMENS, Wednesday 16th September
LGU/Amy Goodin for the girls last week and continuing her good form saw Lesley Sadler come in the winner on nett 64. Sandra Gillies and Pauline Craig were next, both on nett 66 ahead of Shirley Carew on nett 67 and Jeanne Taylor and Janet Pincock both on nett 69. Nett 70 for Pam Williams, Val Willis and Flo Watkins and Kate Keen grabbed the last counter on nett 71. New World nearest the pin went to Sandra Gillies, All Teed Up to Lesley Sadler and Twos were scored by Pauline Craig, Jeanne Taylor and Lynn Morrell. Highlight of the day for the Ladies though went to Chris Taylor with a Hole in One, congratulations Chris, must be getting easy now!
Sept 13
WEEKEND
Getting towards the pointy end of Club Champs qualifying and the scoring has stepped up another level as well! Saturday’s Men’s 0-16 division saw Stu Ingham blitz the field with a nett 65 followed by Les Mason on nett 67 and Chris Ranish on nett 68. Nigel Bailey, Geoff Major and Craig Wilson were next all on nett 69 whilst Phil Archibald and Ray Clarke rounded things out in this group with nett 70. The 17 and over group were lead in by Keith Williams on nett 69 followed closely by Ian Brinkworth on nett 70 and Nigel Graham on nett 71. Duncan Pincock, Les Cherry and Frank Delaney all on nett 72 followed and then the nett 73s of Larry Gray and Karl Churchward. Ray Clarke took out the Publishers, Bob Bentley the Royal Oak, Snake Eyes went to Les Cherry and the All Teed Up to Brayden Mazey. Twos were popular as well with Stu Ingham greedily having two while the rest were left to one each being Lyn Andrews, Shirley Carew, Ray Clarke, Lance Sayer, Lyn Evans, Beth Gordon, Bob Bentley, Russ Morgan, Toby Hempleman and Chris Ranish.
The ladies had a Captains Trophy Stableford round on Saturday with the scoring quite subdued as only Beth Gordon came in above average on 39 points. Shirley Carew met the bar on 36 points before things slipped a tad to the 33s of Margaret Bradshaw and Lesley Sadler and all the 32s going to Janet Pincock, Barbara Birchall, Sue Braiden, June Prince and Val Edwards. Ngaire Taylor won the All Teed Up, Beth Gordon the New World nearest the pin and the Publishers for the girls was left unclaimed.
VETERANS, Tuesday 8 September.
A field of 33 men and one lady teed off in pleasant cloudy bright conditions for Veterans Day. As expected most of the Stableford scores were pretty high. The winner on the day was Mike (‘I’ve found out how to play golf again”) Holt with 45 points. Second was Terry Courtney on 42 points who failed to find the club house afterwards to claim his prize followed by a majestic quartet on 40 points, namely George Rink, John Lett, Ray White and Wal McKnight. It was good to see Ken Prince in the field as he tells us that he had an appointment elsewhere. Long may we continue to see you at golf Ken! (Thanks to Bob Walker for stepping in to the spacious shoes temporarily being vacated by Tim Carr as Veterans correspondent!)
WOMENS, Wednesday 9 September.
A good size field for round 5 of the Coyle Cup for women saw a Par round being contested and some good scores being posted at the top end of the results. Countback was required to separate the winners and Lynn Morrell got the nod over Pam Williams with both posting very healthy 6up scores, just ahead of Flo Watkins on 5up. Gay Martin was on her own on 3up before a bunch on 2up being Ngaire Taylor, Vicki Bain, Yvonne Baylis, Janet Pincock and Corrie Van Zanten. Shirley Carew on 1up got the last paying spot in the list on countback with the unlucky ones being Colleen Southey, Nadine Jansen and Caral Rink. New World nearest the pin on this occasion went to Pam Fitzgerald, the All Teed Up to Marge Robson and twos were scored by Flo Watkins and Beth Gordon.
Sept 7
WEEKEND
Nothing like fantastic weather and the sniff of competition in the air as the first round of Club Champs qualifying saw over 80 golfers at the course on Saturday. In the Ladies first round, Sandra Gillies made no competition of things posting a nett 69, 3 shots clear of her nearest rivals, Shirley Carew and Caral Rink who both posted nett 72. Nett 73 for Lesley Sadler and Lisa Harkness and nett 74 for Lyn Morrell and Beth Gordon. Then came the nett 76s with only Susan Slaughter and Lyn Andrews getting in the money with theirs as the unlucky to miss out were Chris Taylor, Jeanne Taylor, Nadine Jansen and Marg Robson. Putting was also being monitored on the day and sharing the least putts were Susan Slaughter, Corrie Van Zanten and Caral Rink. The All Teed Up winner this time around was Lyn Andrews, New World nearest the pin went to June Prince while the Publishers went to Ngaire Taylor.
The men's 0-15 division was lead in by Russ Morgan with a fine nett 67 just edging Les Mason on nett 68 and Stu Ingham and Nigel Bailey on nett 69. Last years champ, Jason Sadler was next sharing nett 70 with Chris Ranish and Barry Bentley with the rest of the placings in this division going to Eric Collings with nett 71, Warren Birdling with nett 72 and Lance Sayer with nett 73, (but only on countback!) The 16 and over group had a similarly close range of scores which should makes things interesting when it comes to the crunch end of qualifying. Leading them in here was Ian Gordon on nett 68, just ahead of Chris Connor, Colin Larsen and Jim Harris all on nett 69. Dean Schaef followed on nett 70, Bob Bentley and Ash Braggins were next on nett 71 before the nett 72s of Barry Hare and Les Cherry and the nett 73 of Karl Churchward. Les Mason grabbed the Publishers this week and Warren Birdling the Royal Oak whilst Jason Walker won the All Teed UP and Colin Larsen the Snake Eyes. And proving yet again that Twos are where the money is at, 83 put their hands up to score one but only 5 did, the lucky ones being Corrie Van Zanten, David Sadler, Dean Schaef, Chris Connor and Pat Carew.
VETERANS, Tuesday 1 September.
Strong gusty winds kept scoring to a more moderate level for the Vets who played the first round of the Captain’s Trophy, a 4bbb contest with drawn partners. Progress in that event will be reported after the early matches sort out the pairs in contention. As well as the Captain's Trophy matches, all participated in a stableford round. The top ten scores there were Martin Sears, whose considerable golfing abilities were more than a match for the windy conditions, topped the field with a score of 40, Max Baylis was next on 39, then Ray White 37, Cyril Burling & Pat Carew both on 36, and Nigel Graham, Chris Connor, Peter Cottier, Mike Holt & John Lett, all with 35 points.
Closest to the pin with the second shot on hole 10 was Russ Sadler, but no one could get a tee shot to come to rest on the green of the designated short hole for the day, hole # 6.
Tuesday (Sept 8), the Carterton course is closed to club members as a business house tournament is scheduled. However, a number of Vets plan to go north to take up the invitation from the Takapau club to join them for a round.
WOMENS, Wednesday 2 September.
Amy Goodin Salver and Midweek Putting for the girls last week and winning the putting was Mary Edwards with 26 putts. Countback was required to separate the scores however and the winner was Pam Williams over Shirley Carew both with nett 70. Nett 73 for Nadine Jansen and Ngaire Taylor, net 74 for Gay Martin and Corrie Van Zanten with Yvonne Baylis next on nett 76 and Suzanne Fuller had a nett 77. New World nearest the pin went to Nadine Jansen and the All Teed Up to Bernice Parker while Nadine Jansen and Corrie Van Zanten were the only ones to score a Two.
Sept 1
WEEKEND
The Elder Trophy mixed 4BBB on Saturday and a great turnout saw 71 folk on the course! Leaving David to play his Coyle cup match, Lesley Sadler instead teamed up with Graham Hutchby and with 48 points were our winners for this year. Next on 46 was the team of Margaret Bradshaw and John Lett followed closely by two teams on 45 being Caral and George Rink and Sue Braiden and Ash Braggins. 44 for the next 3 pairs being Susan and Chris Slaughter, Vicki and Nigel Bain and Shirley and Pat Carew whilst the final 2 wining pairings scored 43 and they were Flo Watkins and Trevor Clayton and Miria Te Tau and Erik De Gans. In the men's field, Lance Sayer claimed line honours with 40 points ahead of Karl Churchward on 39, Dean Schaef on 38 and Barry Bentley and Russ Sadler both on 37 points. Publishers this week went to Vicki Bain for the Ladies and Lyn Evans for the men, whilst the All Teed Up for the Ladies went to Caral Rink and Chris Ranish for the men. Snake Eyes went to Chris Connor, the Royal Oak to Frank Delaney and the Women's closest on #12 to Val Edwards. A good number of twos were scored but with a good sized field a good collect was still to be had and so the happy folk were Vic Domanski, Wayne Taylor, Les Mason, Barry Bentley, Frank Delaney, Pat Carew, Miria Te Tau and Brayden Mazey.
VETERANS, Tuesday 25 August.
Last Tuesday was a pleasant enough day for a round of golf. Indeed the various elements which combine to influence how well the field scores must have all been positive because the top half dozen stableford scores were all in the 40s. Counting upwards for those, Ralph Day and Pat Carew scored 40. Bob Walker was 41, Cyril Burling 42, and Peter Cottier, who could be forgiven for thinking he’d done enough to clinch top prize, had a fantastic 44 points. We hope you’ll understand why we’ve had to delicately lead up to the winning score & scorer. We don’t want you falling off your seat when you read this. The winner’s score was a huge forty-eight points. (The Handicap Vulture’s wings are a-flapping!) So who is the 48 points scorer? Why it’s birthday boy, Ash Braggins. When the buzz of disbelief settled, there were calls for a sample to be taken and tested so the rest of us can try whatever it is that Ash takes for performance enhancing golf. He cleverly diverted that attention by offering all present a piece of his birthday cake. (Later, when quietly asked about his round, Ash did - with trademark wry smile to the fore - share a wee secret. But only on condition that it remains unpublished. My lips are sealed.) Coming back to earth now, the scores of the also-rans that were good enough to rate a mention were George Rink with 39 points, John Lett & John Braiden who both scored 38, Tim Carr had 37, followed by three on 36 – Keith Williams, Geoff Rolls and Mike Holt. Jason Walker (honorary vet) was closest to the pin on #10, and Peter Cottier won the goodies for the best tee shot on # 15
WOMENS, Wednesday 26 August.
Julie Cowie/LGU and Amy Goodin Eclectics was the name of the game last Wednesday and though the competition was tight the scoring was subdued. Leading them in on nett 71 was Shirley Carew ahead of Mary Edwards on nett 74 and Marg Thompson and Bev Tregurtha both on nett 76. Nett 77 for Val Willis, Vicki Bain and Suzanne Fuller whilst Barbara Birchall had a nett 78 and Pam Williams a nett 79. New World nearest the pin went to June Prince and the All Teed Up to Margaret Bradshaw.
OTHER
On a sadder note, the club mourns the passing of one of its members Brian Craig and our thoughts go out to Pauline in her time of loss.

WEEKEND
First news from the weekend was the drawing of the big club raffle by Sir Brian Lochore on Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to Janet Campbell from the Mahunga club, (pictured), on her win and also to the many other prize winners! Another quick mention must be made of the Maori Tournament hosted at the club on Saturday, thanks to all concerned for the efforts in making it a very successful and enjoyable day by all. Fine sunny conditions abounded but hey, its always like that in Carterton!
Sunday saw a good number of members playing their normal club day as a result of the course being closed on Saturday. Both the men and the women played Stroke rounds and for the Ladies, the winner was Nadine Jansen with a fine nett 65 just edging Val Willis with nett 66. Marge Robson and Val Edwards followed with nett 67s then a 68 from Katie Smart, 70 from Barbara Birchall and 71 for Pauline Craig and Susanne Fuller. Barbara Birchall was closest to the pin on #6, taking out the Publishers prize and the New World nearest the pin on #15 to Val Willis. Only the two 2s and these went to Val Willis and Lyn Morrell.
The men played in two divisions and in the 0-18 group it was a very congested leader board with countback separating the nett 66s of Bevan Lambess, Max Baylis and Steve Larsen. Nett 67 for Mike Holt, 68 for Eric De Gans, 69 for David Sadler and nett 70 to Lance Sayer. The 19 and over group was given no chance by Barry Hare who put a nett 64 up to consign Chris Connor to second for a change with his nett 67. 68 for Chris Williams was good enough for third with Duncan Pincock scoring 70 and Kevin Gibbs and Toby Hempleman both having nett 71. All Teed Up went to Brayden Mazey as did the Publishers but he was kind enough to leave the Royal Oak to Les Mason and the Snake Eyes to Trevor Clayton. Five 2s in the men's draw though two of those went to the ladies mentioned above! That left Lyn Evans, Mike Holt and Les Mason to wave the flag for the blokes.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
The Vets played a Stroke round last Tuesday. For the majority of senior golfers it’s fair to say that Stroke is not the most favoured way of scoring, as a couple of really bad, say double digit, scores on one or a few holes can clobber an otherwise good round. But the gun-golfers are undaunted by that. Top Gun was Jim Harris with a net score of 63. Jim is in a purple patch right now as this exceptional score comes straight after he top scored the previous Saturday with 45 stablefords. Well done Jim. Are you inviting anyone to the ceremonial slashing of your handicap next week? John Lett was next gun-golfer with a net 64. Then came Pat Carew and Toby Hempleman both with net 67, and Bob Walker, Martin Sears, Ken Prince and Tim Carr all on 68. On his own with a 69 was Ralph Day (nice to see you back among the prizes Ralph) followed by Keith Williams, Cyril Burling and Bill Shakespeare, all on net 70. Bringing up the rear of the counting cards, on nett 71, were Ash Braggins and Piri Gillies. Closest to the pin with the second shot on hole 10 was Trevor Clayton. We’ve been a bit concerned that this innovation on holes 10 and either 12 or 15, was in danger of becoming a John Lett benefit. So thanks Trev. And finally, closest to the pin on hole 15. This went to...John Lett...
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
LGU and Julie Cowie Cup for the women last Wednesday and not a lot between the field with Shirley Carew scoring 68 to come in the winner. Nett 70 was next and this was scored by Barbara Birchall, Flo Watkins and Gay Martin with Vicki Bain and Marge Robson rounding things out with nett 71. New World nearest the pin went to Vicki Bain, All Teed Up to Marge Robson and Vicki Bain again for the only twos, getting two of them!
Aug 19
SUNDAY
Carterton hosted the Marquis of Normanby/All Teed Up Ambrose tournament and a tremendous turn out of 38 3 person teams saw the course full despite the somewhat soggy conditions. This competition was played in two halves with both a Nett and Gross Division although winners could only qualify for one side of the draw. On the Gross side of things, Team Tuoro proved far too good for everyone else with their 59 being 2 shots clear of the nearest opposition, so congratulations to Jeffrey, Philip and Toby. On the Nett side of things the margin was even greater and Ross and Eric Collings and Lisa Harkness combined to post a nett 61 no less than 6 shots clear of their nearest competition! Thanks of course must go to Jamie and his All Teed Up team and the Marquis of Normanby for sponsoring such a wonderful prize table, and also many thanks tot he members of the Carterton Match committee for all their work in making the tournament a success from organisation of cards and payment through to the on course barbeque for players.
SATURDAY
Last of the two rounds for the Hill and Hughes Trophy was played by the men last Saturday and congratulations to this years winner, Chris Connor who's combined 84 point Stableford total left him the clear winner. In the 0-17 group, Lyn Evans topped the table with 44 points from Nigel Bailey on 42 and Eric De Gans on 41 points, whilst Allan Heffer, Ross Collings and Pat Carew all came in with 39. The 18 and over group had a clear winner in Jim Harris with 45 points, with Richard Chapman following on 42, George Rink and Chris Connor on 41 and then Erik Behringer, (nice to see you back for the day Eric) and Peter Woodrock on 40. Only the four 2s going to Les Mason, Jason Walker, Erik Behringer and Ray Clarke whilst the Publishers went to Dean Schaef, the Royal Oak to Trevor Clayton, the Snake Eyes to Colin Larsen and the All teed Up to Ray Clarke.
The Ladies played a Stubbs Cup Home Pennant round last weekend and winning on the day, but only on countback, was Barbara Birchall sharing 40 points with Yvonne Baylis. Flo Watkins was next on 39 before the 38s of Val Willis and Janet Pincock , the 37 of Corrie Van Zanten and a 36 from Jeanne Taylor. Sue Braiden won the New World nearest the pin, Flo Watkins the All Teed Up and the Publishers went to Ngaire Taylor.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
The golfing conditions were again pleasant, enticing another good number of Vets to come out and play a par round. Not many surprises in the results, with the shorter handicap players tending to come into their own now. Results: On +6, and a worthy winner who now seems to be back to his competitive best, was Ken Prince. Then on +5 John Lett, George Rink and Piri Gillies; +4 Jim Harris, Keith Williams and Tim Carr; +3 Keith Rayner, Garry Smith, Cyril Burling, Jim Douglas and Vic Domanski; and on +2 Chris Connor, Neil Stewart & Barry Hare. Hugh Ryan, with +1, snuck in for the last prize, by lot. We don’t know what Bill Shakespeare did to get John Lett to release his vice-like grip on the two closest to the pin prizes. But whatever it was, it worked! Closest on # 10 was Max Baylis, while Piri Gillies’ tee-shot was closest to the pin on # 12. Finally, veterans are reminded to register their entry (on the Vet’s notice board) if they want to participate in this years Captain’s Trophy. And put your name on the list for the visit to Takapau on the 8th of September if you would like to make that visit.
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Stableford and Home Pennants for the girls last Wednesday and leading them all in with 43 points was Janet Pincock. Chris Taylor and Flo Watkins were next with 40 points and then the 39s of Sue Ross, Yvonne Baylis and Caral Rink and Corrie Van Zanten with the 38 of Kate Keen rounding out the prizes. New World nearest the pin went to Janet Pincock, the All Teed Up to Barbara Birchall and Janet, Chris Taylor and Corrie also picked up Twos.
COMING UP
Only thing to mention here is to remind members that regular Club Day will be on Sunday from 11am with the members draw around 4pm as the club is closed on Saturday.
Aug 11
SATURDAY
First round of two for the Hill and Hughes Trophy, a stableford aggregate competition was played by the men on Saturday. Leading in the 0-18 handicap group by no less than a five point margin was Stu Ingham with 43 stablefords. Sharing 38 points were Ray Clarke, Lance Sayer, Pat Carew and Cam Coutts with Nigel Bain and Jim Harris rounding things out with their 37s. The 19 and over group was also topped by 43 points by Chris Connor ensuring that Stu will have some competition heading in to the second round. Barry Hare was not far behind on 41 points and neither was George Rink with 40. Ray Morris followed on 38 points, Toby Hempleman with 37 and then 36 for both Keith Williams and Frank Delaney. Twos were a bit more plentiful this week with five being scored going to Barbara Birchall, Karl Churchward, Ross Collings, Martin Sears and Ray Clarke. The Publishers was won by Ray Morris and the Royal Oak by Frank Delaney, the Snake Eyes went to George Rink and Barry Bentley the All Teed Up.
The Ladies last weekend were involved in a LGU Robson Cup with Putting round and winning in the Putting with 27 putts was Pauline Craig. Winning the Nett competition by a healthy 4 strokes was Marge Robson on nett 65. Next on nett 69 were the trio of Val Willis, Lyn Morrell and Barbara Birchall, followed closely by Val Edwards on nett 70. Shirley Carew was next with nett 72 and then the nett 73s of Pam Williams and Emma Morris. Val Edwards claimed the All Teed Up, Marge Robson the New World nearest the pin and the Publishers went unclaimed.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
Tuesday 4 August saw another good muster of vets who played a stableford round. Scores were not quite as hot as they have been lately! But 41 is still a very good score and that was what Wal McKnight and Chris Connor recorded with Wal getting the first prize voucher by lot.
Next in line were Barry Hare on 40, Keith Williams 39, Max Bayliss 38, Tim Carr 37, and then George Rink & Bob Walker both on 36. Next, all on 35, were John Barry, Bill Shakespeare, John Lett, Terry Courtney and Pat Carew.
For the first time in ages, the Vets included two closest to the pin awards; closest after 2 shots on the par four 10th, and closest with the tee shot on the par three 12th. Is anyone surprised that John Lett won both of these contests? These are not sponsored prizes but one wag suggested an appropriate name would be the “John Lett Benefit Award, A and B” Bill Shakespeare is thinking about getting some professional advice to explore the possibility of requiring John to play those 2 holes left-handed.
Some comings and goings: Welcome home Neil Stewart from your recent trip to the UK. Expect to see Neil’s name in print once he gets his swing re-aligned. And we say au revoir to the redoubtable John (JB) and Annie Barry. Not only were they both actively involved in Tuesday Vets, but in all golf at Carterton. In reply to Bill Shakespeare’s best wishes for their travels, JB said the good news for us is that they are going (the pillage will stop!) The bad news is that they enjoyed their golf here so much that they will be back in the new year!
And finally, congratulations to Jim Harris on his collect of $80 in the Vet’s Glotto draw. Thought we’d mention that in case Jim just plain forgot to tell Jenny about his good fortune!
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Something for all of the girls in last Wednesdays competition with an LGU Amy Goodin Salver/Midweek Cup and Putting! Big winning Margins seemed to be the order for the results this week as on this occasion it was Shirley Carew whose nett 65 was 5 shots clear of Vicki Bain's nett 70. Nett 71 for Annie Barry in her farewell round with the same score for Margaret Thomspon. 72s for Val Willis and Pam Fitzgerald followed by 73 for Mary Edwards, Gay Martin and Pam Williams and then the 74s of Jenny Duggan and Alison Bodle. Val Willis had the best of the Putting competition with a commendable 25 putts. The All Teed Up for Wednesday went to June Prince and the New World nearest the pin to Annie Barry, (best get in quick before your flight!). Twos were scored by Pam Fitzgerald and Shirley Carew only, ensuring a great collect for them both!
COMING UP
This Sunday Carterton hosts the Marquis of Normanby / All Teed Up Ambrose tournament. After receiving feedback from a number of sources, it has been decided to alter the format for this tournament with all restrictions on team handicaps now removed. To this end, prizes will be awarded in both nett and gross totals with teams eligible for only one. Please contact the club for more details.
Aug 3
SATURDAY
This years running of the Violet Ward Memorial saw some terrific scores come ins from the Four Ball Best Ball teams with only 2 points separating the top 9 placings! This year the Trophy is shared between two teams at opposite ends of their golfing experience with Katie Smart and Brayden Mazey sharing line honours with Barbara Birchall and Chris Connor both teams coming in with 45 stablefords. A string of 44s followed and these were scored by the following teams, Jeanne Taylor/Lyn Evans, Sandra and Piri Gillies, Val Willis/Russ Morgan and Pam and Keith Williams. 43s rounded things out and these went to Margaret Bradshaw and Graham Hutchby, Shirley and Pat Carew and Annie Barry and Greg Martin.
Those men who played a stableford round on their own were lead in by David Wills with 39 points ahead of Bevan Lambess on 38. Peter Cottier and John Lett were next on 37, (too much time in the trees on 15 John?), then Ian Fellingham on 36 and Jim Harris on 35. Snake Eyes went to Toby Hempleman this week and All Teed Up to Lyn Evans, with Barry Hare taking out the Royal Oak prize on #12 and John Barry the Publishers on #6. The Ladies' spot prizes went to Barbara Birchall for the Publishers, Gay Martin on #12 and the All Teed Up to Caral Rink.
Only the two 2s on a Saturday with a good turnout saw David Wills and Max Bayliss grab no less than 15 vouchers each, more than covering their entries for the rest of the year!
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
Last Tuesday the vets played the 4th and last round of the Jack Cross Memorial Winter Plate. This competition is scored using Bisque Par, the winner being the one with the top cumulative score from any 3 rounds of the 4 rounds played. This has been an intriguing contest which has had the punters guessing all the way through to the finish. Firstly the days results, +8 Hugh Rolls & Cyril Burling, +7 Tim Carr, +6 Frank Delany, Nigel Graham, Ralph Day, Graham Steffert, Peter Cottier and Toby Hempleman. And the winner of the trophy? Well in the final analysis Cyril Burling’s 8 up, added to his two previous best scores of 14 up, gave him a clear cut margin for a three round total of 22 up! Well done that man. (The Handicap Monitoring Agency has noted your club membership number for special attention.) Second place went to the consistent Ash Braggins with a total of 17 up, followed by Barry Hare, whose best three rounds total was 16 up
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Coyle Cup for the Ladies last Wednesday and this meant a PAR round. Two of the women were out in front of the others and were only separated by countback and the se were in order of merit, Beth Gordon and Gay Martin both scoring +6. Caral Rink was next on +4 followed by Ngaire Taylor on +3, Flo Watkins on +2, Alison Bodle, Val Willis and Annie Barry on +1 and then Shirley Carew on square.
Alison Bodle won the All Teed Up and Pam Fitzgerald the New World nearest the pin.
July 27th
SATURDAY
Saturday had qualifying folks playing for the Annual Grandad's and Grandmas Trophy and congratulations this year goes to Caral Rink and Duncan Pincock respectively.
Duncan's nett 65 faced some stiff competition for the trophy from both divisions and in his division, 17 and over, the next competitor in was Peter Cottier with nett 66. This was followed by Russ Sadler on nett 68, Graham Hutchby on nett 69, Allan Heffer on nett 70 and then the 71s of Colin Larsen, Ken Prince and Toby Hempleman. in the 0-16 group, Lyn Evans with nett 66 was just ahead of Nigel Bailey on nett 67 before the nett 68s of Sheridan Rangihuna, David Wills and Api Rangihuna. Greg Martin followed with nett 69 and then the 70s of Ross Collings, Brayden Mazey and Barry Bentley. The Publishers this week went to George Rink, the All Teed Up to Lyn Evans and the Snake Eyes to Bob Bentley. A few twos were seen around too going to Barry Hare, Lyn Andrews, Ray Morris, Jeannie Taylor, Nigel Tomlin, Barbara Birchall and Lyn Evans.
SUNDAY
Good to see a good crowd at the course Sunday too for a change as the South Wairarapa Workingmen's club had their regular competition. A short field in the Ladies still saw a close competition as Lesley Sadler ran out the winner on countback from Val Edwards both on 33 points. In the men's competition, Trevor Clayton was either playing a different course to everyone else or was getting bonus points for style as he ran away with things scoring no less than 46 stablefords! David Sadler was next on a mere 40 points before 39 from Lyn Evans, 38 from John Braiden, 37 from Greg Mullis and Steve Larsen and then 36 from Sheridan Rangihuna. Two's went to Pat Carew, Trevor Clayton and Api Rangihuna.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
On Tuesday 21 July the Vets played the 3rd round of the Jack Cross Memorial Winter Plate with some interesting results. This was the 3rd round of a 4 round contest in which the best three scores count. But first off we'd like to say that it was a pleasure to have Yvonne Bayliss join us for this round. Maybe her presence explains why Max seemed to be so much better behaved than usual?
To the scores. Top of the shop was Chris Williams with 9 Up. While accepting that Bisque Par offers more scoring scope than a Par round, +9 is an astoundingly good score (that may well attract handicapper interest!) Well done Chris. Next with what would normally be regarded as a match winning score of 8 up was Jim Harris (regularly mentioned in despatches) and Geoff Rolls & Peter Cottier (not featured among the leaders recently: a couple of dark horses, strategically timing their run?) Next, on 7 up, were Cyril Burling & Max Bayliss. Then Ash Braggins with 6 up, followed by Barry Hare and Jim Douglas on +5. On his own with 4 up was John Lett. And finally on 3 up Nigel Graham, Terry Courtney & Keith Williams with Keith being the unlucky one to miss a prize on the draw.
So at the three-quarter stage of this competition, the aggregate scores of the leading half dozen contenders stand like this - Ash Braggins +16, Cyril Burling & Chris Williams +14, Bill Shakespeare +13, Geoff Rolls & Annie Barry +12. The last round is scheduled for next Tuesday. Watch this space.
Just finally a reminder to all Vets who have not yet returned any unsold raffle tickets and butts. Please get them to Bill Shakespeare, pronto.
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Captains Trophy for the girls last Wednesday and 4 points clear of her nearest rival was Sue Ross with 39 points. Vicki Bain was next with 35 points followed by Mary Edwards on 34 and a group on 33 being Flo Watkins, Lesley Sadler, Anne Barry, Gay Martin and Pam Williams. Pam Fitzgerald was next on 32 points before the 31s which rounded out the proceedings going to Shirley Carew, Ngaire Taylor, Margaret Thompson, Sue Braiden and Nadine Jansen. Quite a few Twos were scored with a couple going to Mary Edwards, and then one each to Gay Martin, Caral Rink, Nadine Jansen, Barbara Birchall, Shirley Carew and Janet Pincock. Yvonne Bayliss won the New World nearest the pin and Shirley Carew grabbed the All Teed Up prize.
COMING UP
Don't forget to get your paid entries in for the All Teed Up / Marquis Hotel Ambrose tournament on August 16 as places are limited and with $3000 worth of prizes up for grabs they'll be going fast!
July 20th
SATURDAY MENS
Stableford again was the game of the day and once again that man John Lett had his name prominent in results as his 41 points edged Graham Hutchby's on countback to take line honours in the 17 and over group. Would not get to comfortable in this division John... Trevor Clayton was next with 39 points before the 38s of Terry Courtney and Keith Williams, the 36 of Wal McKnight and Ash Braggins getting the last prize on countback with his 35 points. In the 0-16 Group, things were also tight at the top and in this instance it was Bevan Lambess getting the nod over David Wills both scoring 40 points. David Sadler was next with 38 points, Eric Collings with 37 and then a string of 36s to fill things out going to Brayden Mazey, Lance Sayer and Russ Morgan. Hard Luck Lyn, they ran out of places for your 36! The Publishers went to Api Rangihuna, The Royal Oak to David Wills, the All Teed Up to Terry Courtney and the Snake Eyes went begging. Only the 6 Twos, and these went to David Sadler, Lyn Andrews, Eric Collings, Bevan Lambess, Brayden Mazey and Craig Wilson.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
After drawing partners, one high handicapper and one low, the Vets played a 4bbb stroke round with each team’s handicap adjusted downwards to 25% of the pair's combined handicap.
One of the pairings really liked the arrangement, returning a match-winning score of 64 net. Well done Piri Gillies and Jim Douglas, a formidable team if ever there was one.
The next best score was 3 strokes away. We apologise to those readers becoming mildly bored with the same names appearing each week, but Ken Prince and Toby Hempleman keep playing consistently good golf - & not just at Vets on Tuesdays. Their 67 was enough to lift them back onto the dais. (Toby was heard humming the early 80’s hit song “Up where we belong” as he and Ken made their way to the prize table)
Next came four pairs with net 68, requiring a draw for the three remaining prizes. The three successful pairs (apology above applies to most of this group too) were John Barry & Chris Williams, John Braiden & Frank Delaney, and Jim Harris with Cyril Burling. .The pair to miss out was Bob Walker & Tim Carr, a real surprise given this duo's beautifully crafted, skilful, deserving, but luckless, 68. Thanks again to Tim for yet another unbiased report!
July 13th
SATURDAY MENS
The final round of the Springhill Trophy, a stroke event, was played on Saturday and congratulations goes to this years winner, Stu Ingham, who's 135 best two of three total proved too good. Scoring on the day was still very good and for a change I'll provide the higher group first, being the 16 and over handicaps. Somehow a certain John Lett has found himself in this group but not for long as his nett 63 blew the field away leaving Karl Churchward on nett 66 shaking his head and wondering what had happened! Graham Hutchby was next on nett 69 followed by Keith Williams on nett 70, Les Cherry on nett 71, Alan Heffer on nett 72 and then the nett 73s of Larry Gray and Toby Hempleman. In the 0-15 group, Jay Hodgkiss was to the fore in a tight bunch with his nett 69 edging Barry Bentley and Matt Casey both scoring nett 70. The rest of the placings all scored nett 71 and these went to Davie Wills, Pat Carew and Stu Ingham. The Royal Oak went to Ian Gordon this week and the Publishers to Dave Sadler, the All Teed Up to Russ Morgan whilst the Snake Eyes went begging. Extra large holes on the Par 3s this week too as 10 Twos were scored going to Vicki Bain, Ian Gordon, Les Cherry, Nigel Bailey, Lance Sayer, Pat Carew, Dave Wills, John Lett, Barry Bentley and Jay Hodgkiss.
SATURDAY WOMENS
The Ladies had an LGU Robson Cup with Putting day and the putting went to Lesley Sadler with 28 putts. Best nett of the day went to Vicki Bain on nett 71 just beating out Katie Smart on nett 72. Nett 73 for Shirley Carew and Beth Gordon, followed by Gay Martin on nett 74 and then all the nett 75s of Bev Tregurtha, Miria Te Tau, Nadine Jansen, Barbara Birchall, Sue Ross, Flo Watkins and Lyn Morell. Must have been some countback! Vicki Bain, Nadine Jansen and Bev Tregurtha picked up the only twos amongst the ladies, Caral Rink won the All Teed Up, Nadine Jansen the New World nearest the pin and the Publishers was not struck.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
Last Tuesday the Vets played the second round of the Jack Cross Memorial Winter Plate, a valued trophy which goes to the golfer with the best total score from three of four rounds of Bisque Par. The pleasant weather and superb condition of the course encouraged some good scores.
Top score of the group was John Braiden with 8 up. John has recorded some very good scores in recent weeks & that usually causes Handicap Man to start hovering like a hawk. All the same, John could well have put himself in contention for this trophy if his good run of form continues. Right behind him with scores of 7 up were Ash Braggins and Cyril Burling. Next on 6 up were another two who are scoring consistently well - Barry Hare and Ken Prince. There were no fewer than seven scores of 5 up, and by lot, their place in the prize-winning list ranked them in this order –Garry Smith, Chris Slaughter, Chris Williams, Pat Carew, Jack Jones, Ralph Day and George Rink.
After two rounds of this contest, the leading aggregate scores are Bill Shakespeare with 11 up (his odds at the Betting Shop have shortened considerably) then a group of three all on 10 up - Annie Barry, Ash Braggins and Bob Walker. The next round is scheduled for 21 July.

Aiken and Pegg Regain Champions Mantle
2009 Wairarapa Men's Open Foursomes
Despite some reservations over the weather, a good sized field competed in this years running of the Wairarapa Men's Open Foursomes. With sporadic drizzle over the duration of the 36 hole event, the course which was once again presented in magnificent fashion by Tony and his team, held up magnificently and many compliments were heard over the day. This years Gross winners were a repeat of two years previous in Phil Aiken and Richard Pegg with 143, only just holding out last years winners, B Rowland and P Spearman-Burn with 145. The Nett winners for this year were A. Bennett and N Ellis with 138, 4 points clear of the runners up, K. Stratford and T. Cummings with 142. Many thanks to all our sponsors for this event, Trust House Wairarapa, Premier Bacon, Wairarapa Golf, Speight's Beer and Cottier Wines without who's generosity this would not be possible. Club Captain Dean Schaef would also like to extend his thanks and appreciation to all of his team, too many to mention, who all helped to make this event a success once again, from those ladies in the starters box through to the other members of his match committee who pitched in leading up to and on the day of the competition. Roll on next year!
SATURDAY
This was the day to play in the last week or so as magnificent conditions greeted a good sized men's field for a Long/Short draw Stroke round with putting trophy. The putting Trophy on this occasion was shared by a couple of golfers at opposite ends of their careers being Bob Bentley and young Braiden Mazey both having 25 putts, well done guys. In the 0-16 handicap division there was some terrific scoring in the sunny conditions with the receptive greens obviously agreeing with golfers as all 8 placings scored below nett par. Coming in first with nett 63 was Les Mason ahead of Pat Carew on nett 65 and Braiden Mazey on nett 66. Ross Collings was next on nett 67, Dean Schaef on nett 68 before the nett 69s of Matt Casey, Russ Morgan and Max Bayliss. The 17 and over division also had some good scores and showing yet again that starters duty agrees with his game was Duncan Pincock on nett 66. James Morris next on nett 67 before the nett 69s of Karl Churchward and Gary Dewhurst. Nett 70 for the day's other starter in Russ Sadler whilst the rest of the placings were filled by nett 71s scored by Ken Prince, Graham Hutchby and Peter Cottier. The All Teed Up this week went to Jay Hodkiss, the Snake Eyes to Bob Bentley, Publishers to Ross Collings and The Royal Oak to Nigel Bain. No shortage of Twos either with them being scored by David and Lesley Sadler, Barbara Birchall, Matt Casey, Bevan Lambess, Max Bayliss, Chris Connor and Ross Collings.
The Ladies on Saturday had a stableford round for the Stubbs Cup and young Katie Smart proved too good winning with 40 points from Lesley Sadler on 38 and Sue Ross on 37 points. Countback separated Ngaire Taylor and Corrie Van Zanten on 36 points before the 35s of Lynn Morrell, Barbara Birchall and Shirley Carew and the 34 of Beth Gordon. All Teed Up went to Beth Gordon, the New World nearest the pin to Janet Pincock and the Publishers to Nadine Jansen. Nadine also grabbed a couple of twos whilst Lesley Sadler and Barbara Birchall got one each.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
A rather bleak day last Tuesday reduced the Vets field to about half the usual numbers. For those hardy souls who did get around the course, the satisfaction of getting their Tuesday golf fix was more important than any concern about the vagaries of the weather.
Top of the scorecard with 43 points was new member John Barry, again signalling his liking for the course. The closest anyone got to that score was John Braiden who could have been forgiven for thinking that his 41 points would have been good enough to win the first prize petrol voucher.
Next in line was Barry Hare on 39. followed by Bill Shakespeare with 37. Next, all on 34 points, was a group of four vying for the last two prizes. By lot, the lucky two were John Lett and Tim Carr.
For a change, the winning list this week makes no mention of John Barry’s other half, Annie. But the Barry's run of good fortune continued back in the club-house with Annie first winning one of the raffles, and then the $25 prize up for grabs in the Vets weekly Glotto sweepstake.
Finally, a wee credit. The pile of firewood on the right side of 3 fairway is a reminder of the vets firewood working bees, which go like this. Tony drops and rings a usually huge pine tree and a team of 10 or so vets (& thankfully Alistair Smith with some of his gear) cut, split and stack the wood in a heap so it can dry out. But that’s not the end of the job. Sometime later the firewood is delivered, i.e. loaded piece by piece into a ute/high-sided trailer, carted to the buyer, and unloaded. Buster Juno & Garry Smith have been doing all this delivery work so we’d like to acknowledge their extra efforts. Good stuff. The firewood sales are excellent income for the club.
OTHER NEWS
Saturday also saw the final of the Steele Cup for men being played and the pairing of Pat Carew and Trevor Clayton proved too good on the day for Cameron Coutts and Gary Dewhurst though both pairs played some good golf. Congratulations to the winners and there is always next year for the runners up!
June 29th
SATURDAY
What a great day was presented to golfers on Saturday as the "calm before the storm" gave us a moment to savour. The men were playing a stableford round and 56 of them decided they had to make the most of things! In the 0-16 division Barry Bentley continued his run of impressive form edging Russ Morgan on countback, both coming in with 40 stablefords. Les Mason with 39 was next on his own before countback again separated Nigel Tomlin, Pat Carew and Phil Archibald all on 38 points, with Steve Larsen and Nigel Bailey's 37s and Kambel Barham's 36 filling out the placings. In the 17+ division there must have been a rainbow or two with pots of gold around the course as our resident Irishman, Frank Delaney left all in his wake with 44 points. Colin Larsen and Gary Dewhurst were next on 41 points, John Braiden followed with 40 and then came the 39s of Ash Braggins and Jim Harris, the 38s of Terry Courtney and Richard Chapman, with Trevor Clayton grabbing last prize with his 37 points. Publishers this week went to Ross Collings, the Royal Oak to Gary Dewhurst, All Teed Up to Kambel Barham and the Snake Eyes to Les Cherry as you can't get closer to the pin in Two than in the hole! Twos were popular as well with them going to Richard Chapman, Greg Martin, Barry Bentley, Karl Churchward, Nigel Bailey, Gary Dewhurst, Phil Archibald, Kambel Barham, Jim Harris, Barbara Birchall, Craig Wilson and not to forget Les Cherry!
or the Women, Saturday brought around Captains Trophy and Stubbs Cup, so in short more Stablefords! A closely fought thing on the day as Gay Martin won the countback over Beth Gordon both scoring 41 points. Barbara Birchall was next on 40 ahead of Shirley Carew on 37, Sue Ross on 36, Sue Braiden on 35 and Lisa Harkness on 34. Barbara was the only Lady with a Two so cleaned up in both Twos draws as well as the All Teed Up for ladies, Lyn Andrews got the New World nearest the pin and Jenny Duggan the Publishers on #6.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
On Tuesday 23 June a good field of Vets played a Nassau Stableford round, which combines three competitions; best scores for 18 holes, for the first nine, & for the second nine.
No real surprise to see Bob Walker’s recent consistency paying off with a score of 39 points. He took top prize by lot from new member (no longer visitor) John Barry. Welcome JB. Now we’ve let you join, you can knock off these top finishes each week if you don’t mind! Third and fourth, both with a score of 37 were Chris Connor and Terry Courtney. Again that’s no surprise.
For the first nine the top score with 20 points was Keith Williams, who now clearly has no problems navigating through the first half of the course. Second was a visitor from jafa-land, David Carr, who scored 19. And third on 18 points was Nigel Graham, who we welcome back after his recent orthopaedic modifications, which we’re pleased to hear went very well.
Trick shot of the first nine came from Chris Williams whose drive off 5 tee was reported to fly far right, beyond the trees behind 6 green, and landing on the “boulder bank”. This seemed to give the ball an energy recharge as it then catapulted left, landing back on 5 fairway with an unimpeded view of 5 green! Chris (dubbed “the Pinball Wizard” by his group) was unsurprised with the outcome. He was part of the working bee that placed the hundreds of boulders on the eastern bank of the water race & remembers positioning a large red one, aligned northwest, for just such a shot!
No such fancy golf in the competition for the last nine holes, and no surprises either. Max Baylis was first with 19, followed by Pat Carew and Bill Shakespeare, both on 18.
Finally, a point of clarification regarding the visiting jafa. Not only did he have an extraordinarily flukey round with a 2nd prize (and worse, showed no dignity at all in winning the match against his gallant father), this David joker also won 3 of the after match raffles! Not wanting to take any items with him on the flight home that evening, the goodies were headed for Greytown. Now there is simply no truth in the scurrilous story that his father insisted he choose the wine prizes rather than the chickens. No-sir-ee. He chose wine with his mother in mind, because of her well-established love of vino.
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Bisque Par for the Ladies last Wednesday and some good scoring there was too with only a single hole deciding first place from all the others! Yvonne Bayliss made the hole that mattered as her +4 earned her top ranking on the day. All the rest had +3 and in order these were Marg Thompson, Marg Robson, Flo Watkins, Sue Ross, Lesley Sadler and Annie Barry. Nearest the pin went to Mary Edwards and the All teed Up went to Chris Taylor. Only the three Twos and two of them went to Yvonne Bayliss with Sue Ross grabbing the other.
COMING UP
Next Sunday, weather permitting, sees the annual running of the Wairarapa Open Men's Foursomes. Still a few places available so contact the Carterton golf club for more info.
June 22nd
SATURDAY
Well if anyone was unsure about whether winter was here or not, Saturday answered them in a hurry! Subdues scoring eventuated but this only proved to keep the competition close in this years running of the Bertha Elbe Memorial Trophy. 38 points were posted by no less than 3 competitors and the eventual winner by countback was Lisa Harkness so congratulations Lisa and condolences to Graham Hutchby and Stu Ingham!
Lisa obviously also took out the Women's side of the draw with her 38, this was ahead of Katie Smart on 36 and then the 35s of Lesley Sadler, Val Edwards and Pauline Craig. Lesley also picked up the All Teed Up prize but neither the Publishers or New World nearest the pins were manageable by the girls.
In the Men's draw, Grahams 38 was deemed better than Stu's, giving him top prize before the 37s of Trevor Clayton and Frank Delaney. Brayden Mazey and Terry Courtney shared next place on 36 before a long string of 35s to Larry Gray, Cam Coutts, Russ Morgan, Ray Clarke and John Lett. Nigel Bailey was the Publishers winner this week, and Trevor Clayton won the Royal Oak, Snake Eyes went to Duncan Pincock and All Teed UP to Brayden Mazey. Despite the conditions and the scoring there were still a few twos to be had and they went to Trevor Clayton, Nigel Bailey, Barry Hare and Brayden Mazey.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
As mentioned earlier, it’s official and winter is here. The 28 Vets who turned up last Tuesday wondered whether Captain Shakespeare’s decision to play, in spite of the bleak forecast, would be vindicated. But Bill’s a canny judge of such matters, and most of the field managed to finish the 18 holes - cold, but without a drenching. And Bill’s payback? Well he scored 7 up to win the Bisque Par round of the day.
Four golfers were tied in second place on 6 up. Trevor Clayton and Toby Hempleman (up near the top again Toby!), & two others who are not even members of the Carterton Club! I refer of course to our visitors Annie Barry and husband John (JB). They are obviously getting very familiar with the course’s crooks and nannies, but that’s really no surprise. They play the Carterton full course about 3 times a week, plus 11’s on a Friday! Fellow competitors take comfort; that revered calculator the Handicap System is watching their progress!
Returning a score of 5 up were Bob Walker, Jimmy Douglas and Tim Carr, followed by Graham Steffert, who scored 4 up. The last three to get some goodies – all on 3 up - were Ash Braggins, Frank Delaney and Garry Smith.
It’s a treat to see Ash getting a bit cockier again, just like his old self. And for good reason. His continuing health recovery is being matched by his return to some great golf form, including hitting a winning score at last Fridays 11’s. Keep it up Ash.
June 15th
SATURDAY
With a dozen of our male members enjoying the delights of some Australian resort courses and another half a dozen or so involved in a tournament at Mahunga, numbers were a little subdued for this years running of the Dalgliesh Salver. The Salver is played for as a High/Low Pairs Chicago Stableford competition which to the uninitiated and the initiated is a bit of a mouthful! In short, a stableford round is played without handicaps and then at the end of the round, your handicap is added to the stablefords you have scored. For the Salver, a high handicapper pairs with a low handicapper and their resulting stablefords are totalled to find the winner. This year the girls made no competition of things with their top three pairings all better than the males top score! So congratulations to this years winners, Vicki Bain and Beth Gordon with a mighty fine 84 points.
They obviously also won their Ladies competition of the day but only just with Shirley Carew and Janet Pincock posting an also commendable 83 points ahead of Corrie van Zanten and Gay Martin on 80 points. Shirley Carew picked up the New World nearest the pin this week, the Publishers went to Corrie Van Zanten and the All Teed Up proved elusive! Only the two 2s and these went to Barbara Birchall and Pauline Craig.
With a couple of visitors in the field who were ineligible for the Salver, the men's draw was handled in the usual high low divisions manner. In the 0-17 group the winner was Barry Bentley with a nice 41 points, this ahead of two on 39 points being Nigel Tomlin and Mike Holt with Nigel winning on countback. Russ Morgan was next on 38 points before further countbacks determined those who got a collect with 37 being Larry Gray and Cam Coutts. in the 18+ group, starters duties agreed with Duncan Pincock as he scorched around for 42 points leaving him well clear of Colin Larsen next on 39 points. Wal McKnight edged Frank Delaney on countback with their 38 point scores whilst countback again brought Chris Connor in to the last winning position. Chris also collected the Publishers with a nice drive on the 6th whilst Matt Casey collected the All teed Up, Bob Bentley the Snake Eyes and the Royal Oak nearest to the pin on #9 proved to hard a task and was not struck. Five 2s in the field going to Jason Van Zanten, Nigel Bailey, Brayden Mazey, Terry Courtney and Barbara Birchall.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
Last Tuesday the Vets greeted a busload of 28 golfers from Opunake Golf Club, the "28 club", who were part way through a Wairarapa golfing holiday. This almost doubled the size of the field so about 60 starters set off on what turned out to be a most enjoyable stableford contest. The visitors, despite the dizzying demands of the social aspects of their tour, played well enough to collect 13 of the prizes on offer while the home team won 10. The top score was a highly competitive 43 points returned by Jim Harris. Well done James. (Seem to recall that he was also at the top of the score-card the previous week, albeit with the help of his partner that day.) Just in case Jim is unaware of the implications of scoring so consistently well, he might like to borrow from Max Bayliss the book explaining how the handicap system works. Second on 41 was another Carterton player, Chris Williams, who has been knocking at the door of a good score for some time. Next best were five players on 40, the only one from Carterton being Toby Hempleman. Two local lads on 39 were next - Pat Carew and Ron Lukies, and three more on 37 - Terry Courtney, Tim Carr & Barry Hare. Finally, with scores of 36 points were 10 golfers vying for the last 8 prizes. 6 went to our Taranaki visitors, and one each to Jimmy Douglas &. Annie Barry (our longer term visitor). Unlucky to miss out on the cut? Jim Juno & Max Bayliss. But like Dan Druff, they'll be back!
Footnote: Annie Barry and husband John, who is also a golf enthusiast, are of no fixed abode. They house-sit all over the country & in Oz. This is their 2nd trip to Carterton which they thoroughly enjoy "because the club members are so friendly" They are presently looking after a rural property in Greytown & will be there for several more weeks. Watch out for them Carterton golfers. They are both retired fire-fighters & a thoroughly interesting couple.
JUNIORS
Carterton hosted a Wairarapa Juniors day last Sunday and thanks to the efforts of Dean Mazey the Carterton Junior convenor, Phil Aicken the Wellington Junior Golf Development officer, the sponsorship of the Wairarapa Sub Association and All Teed Up, a great and fun days golf was enjoyed by around 50 of the Wairarapa young up and comers. A North vs. South Match was run over the day with North running out the winners whilst another highlight was the match between All Teed Up Pro Jonti Philipson and young Masterton Star Ben Campbell in which Ben prevailed on I believe the 17th hole! Here's hoping that this sort of day can be repeated and with the numbers looking that good and the standards being so high, it appears that the future of Wairarapa golf is in good hands.
June 8th
All that wonderful weather and a extra day off last week put paid to any reports from me but the change in weather drew everyone out and hence we have news!
SATURDAY
The Men played round 2 of the Springhill Trophy, a stroke competition, was played last Saturday and best score of the day was Steve "Sparky" Larsen who's nett 67 earned him top prize in Men's Group Two. Second was Club Captain Dean Schaef on nett 69 (work on the putting Dean!), George Rink was next on nett 70 followed by Chris Slaughter on nett 71, Allan Heffer on nett 72 and then Karl Churchward and Barry Hare both on nett 73. In Men's Group One, Pat Finn and his nett 68 was just enough to edge a trio on nett 69 being Lyn Evans, David Sadler and Ray Clarke. Nett 70 for Craig Wilson, Les Mason and Mark Graham rounded out the rest of the prizes. Les Mason monopolised the Spot prizes with both the Publishers nearest to the pin on #6 AND the Royal Oak nearest to the pin on #12, though his name was oddly missing from the list of twos... Kambel Barham got the All Teed UP and Chris Connor the Snake Eyes with Twos being scored by Larry Gray, Greg Martin, David Sadler, Barbara Birchall and Russ Morgan.
The Ladies enjoyed an LGU and Putting - Robson Cup round with the scoring being very close and the winner, being decided by countback, was Flo Watkins edging Anne Brewer both with nett 72. Janet Pincock was next on nett 73 before the nett 74s of Bev Tregurtha and Lynn Morrell. nett 75s rounded out the rest of the results and this was scored by no less than 5 of the girls being Vicki Bain, Sandra Gillies, Val Edwards, Sue Ross and Yvonne Bayliss. Putting was also a closely fought thing with the trophy on the day being shared by Val Edwards and Susan Slaughter both having 25 putts. The All Teed Up prize went to Susan Slaughter, the New World nearest the pin to Lesley Sadler and the Publishers to Vicki Bain. Four Twos amongst the women going to Katie Smart, Flo Watkins, Janet Pincock and Barbara Birchall.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
The weather kept improving to be pleasantly fine for the most part of the Vet’s round last Tuesday. Scoring was by the South African stableford method, where each player’s score is multiplied by the partner’s score. So if one player scores 2 points & his partner scores 3, the team score for that hole is 6. Or if a burglar scores 4, and her partner scores zero, then 4 * 0 = zero.
Annie Barry, a visitor, returned with a personal score in the high 40’s, clearly the best on the day. Couple that with another solid round from her partner, the ultra-consistent Jim Harris, and what have you got? 96 points; clear cut winners. Annie assured the two hapless also-rans in this four (Ranish & Carr, whose prime role was to buy the drinks) that some of her shots, & especially the long putts, were a complete surprise to her! She “had never played this well before.” Yeah right.
Speaking of Chris Ranish, well done you for winning $50 in the Vets weekly Glotto contest. Thought we should just mention this in case he forgot to tell Rose when he got home.
Next best score was Keith Williams and his 1st partner, Frank Delany, with 88. Keith’s 2nd partner, Ash Braggins, also figured in the prize list (this group played as a threesome.) Some consistent golfers next - Ron Lukies & Max Baylis with 69 points, a score matched by Martin Sears and Chris Connor. Then the pairing of George Rink with Pat Carew on 67,and finally two pairs on 56 – the Vets “Brains Trust” Bill Shakespeare and Bob Walker, by lot from Ash & Keith.
Footnote: Annie and husband John, who is also a golf enthusiast, are of no fixed abode. They house-sit all over the country & in Oz. This is their 2nd trip to Carterton which they thoroughly enjoy “because the club members are so friendly” They are presently looking after a rural property in Greytown & will be there for several more weeks. Watch out for them Carterton golfers. They are both retired Fire-fighters & a thoroughly interesting couple.
EXTRAS
A little late but no less sincere is the congratulations extended from all members of the Carterton Golf Club to Dame Iritana Te Rangi Tawhiwhirangi and her well deserved damehood, announced in the Queens Birthday honours list last Monday. Also, the Wairarapa Open Men's Foursomes is coming up, so blokes get your Partner sorted out and contact the Carterton Golf Club for details!
May 18th
SATURDAY
The Ultimate for most golfers is scoring one of those rare feats, a hole in one, and so when no less than two were scored on Saturday you can understand the amazement! Congratulations to both Pam Williams (#15) and Terry Courtney (#12) for their respective aces and good luck for many more! This did slightly shade Matt Casey's commendable effort of 25 putts to take out the Putting trophy!
The Men were playing a Stroke round on Saturday and in the 0-16 group, Matt's fine display of putting saw him take out proceedings with nett 65. Next was Les Mason on nett 67, then David Sadler and Lyn Evans both on nett 68 closely followed by a trio on nett 69 being Ray Clarke, Dean Schaef and Phil Archibald. In the 17 and over group, Terry Courtney's ace must not of been his only good hole as his nett 62 would prove, but this sadly for Larry Gray meant net 64 didn't make the grade! Ash Braggins posted a nett 69, Duncan Pincock, Richard Chapman and Chris Slaughter had nett 71s and John Braiden rounded things out with his nett 72. The Publishers went to David Wills, the All Teed Up to Lyn Evans, the Royal Oak to Dean Schaef and the Snake Eyes to Les Cherry. Must have been using larger than normal cups on Saturday too as in the Twos, besides Terry and Pams offerings, there were also 8 others between the Men and the women going to Jeanne Taylor, Frank Delaney, Barbara Birchall, Phil Archibald, Les Mason, Ray Clarke, David Wills and Kate Keen.
The Women played a Captains Trophy / Home Pennants Stableford round on Saturday despite the conditions and low scoring, a tightly fought contest it was with countbacks a plenty being required! In first place, on countback, was Flo Watkins edging Yvonne Bayliss both with 33 points. Sandra Gillies was next on 32 before countback separated those on 31 being Barbara Birchall, Sue Braiden and Anne Brewer. Countback again for Pam Williams and Lyn Andrews, both having 30 points and then Beth Gordon grabbing the final prize with 29. All Teed Up went to Barbara Birchall, New World nearest the pin to Jeanne Taylor and the Publishers to Kate Keen.
LAST WEDNESDAYS WOMENS
The Ladies another LGU Aotearoa Cup / Coronation Medal round last week and again scoring was a bit subdued in this stroke round as nett PAR was the best managed on the day. That honour went to Bev Tregurtha on nett 71 ahead of Bernice Parker on nett 73 and Pauline Craig on nett 74. Margaret Thompson was next on nett 76, Shirley Carew on nett 76 and then the net 77s of Pam Williams and Margaret Bradshaw. The All Teed Up went to Bernice Parker and the nearest the pin on #6 was not struck and Pauline Craig was the only one to score a two.
VETERANS
On Tuesday 12 May the Vets played the 4th and last round of the Autumn Cup, a contest in which the best 3 of 4 rounds count. The odds on favourite starting round 4 was Ray White with a 3 point cushion on the chasing pack. Well Ray clearly kept his focus, finishing with a very competitive 40 points. Adding this to his best two previous scores gave him a winning aggregate total of 121 – a somewhat surprising seven points clear of the best of the rest. Congratulations Ray.
The day’s winning stableford score of 42 points came from Piri Gillies, who’s likely to figure regularly in Vets winning lists now he’s gained the status of FTR (Full-Time Retiree) Next on 41 was John Barry, a visitor from Oz, followed on 40 points by Ray and John Braiden (another good bloke we hope to see more of on Vets Tuesday).
The next 3 – Terry Courtney, Wal McKnight and John Lett – all scored 39, followed by George Rink (yet another FTR) & Jimmy Douglas on 36. There were two on 35 – Garry Smith & Jim Harris, followed by the last 2 prize-winners Keith Rayner & Toby Hempleman on 34 (by lot from Bob Walker, our Starter/Results Compiler!)
While most the field were playing golf, a small comedy/drama was playing out adjacent to the 4th green. We take up the story as the group were going through their putting routines, so immersed that they failed to notice Keith Williams’ mechanised golf trundler had started moving of its own accord. (Trundlers equipped with battery powered motors are known to do that occasionally.) The trundler had been left at the western side of the 4th green, pointing west towards the pond about 25 - 30 metres away.
The inevitability of what was going to happen next became clear to Tony Brunton, who just happened to be on a mower near the 1st green. He finally got the attention of the group but by then it was too late to halt the runaway vehicle, which was heading determinedly toward the pond. On reaching water’s edge it just kept going until it capsized onto its side near the centre of the pond, wheels still turning! With Tony’s assistance, the unit and all the gear was easily salvaged & while everything was damp, no real damage was done. Harry Bare, one of the 4 in this group, asked that we record his thanks to Keith for brightening up an otherwise pretty ordinary round.
May 11th
SATURDAY
Saturday for the Men was the final round of the Clareville Trophy, a PAR competition played over three rounds with the best two aggregated and this years winner on a very good +12 was Ian Gordon. Reasonably subdued scoring in the 0-17 section saw Piri Gillies clear winner on +3 ahead of a trio on +1 being Dean Schaef, David Sadler and Stu Ingham, and then those on square, Lyn Evans and John Lett. The 18+ section had Richard Chapman showing the way with +5, perhaps some of the winnings from last weeks member's draw went in to lessons? Max Bayliss continued his run of good form with +3 ahead of Gary Dewhurst on +2, Terry Courtney on +1 and Wal McKnight and Toby Hempleman on square. More Twos than last week also with 5 being scored in all by Lyn Evans, Nigel Bailey, Frank Delaney, Barry Hare and Piri Gillies. The Publishers this week went to Barry Hare, the Royal Oak to Nigel Bailey, Snake Eyes to Chris Connor and the All Teed Up to Pat Carew.
The Ladies Saturday competition was an LGU Aotearoa Cup as well Coronation Medal and Veterans Cup round so LOTS to play for! Clearing away from the field though and making no competition of things was Pauline Craig with nett 68, well done Pauline! Next was Lyn Andrews on nett 72 from Sandra Gillies and Linda Spooner both with nett 73, Gay Martin with nett 74 and Marge Robson and Sue Braiden both on nett 75. New World nearest the pin went to Nadine Jansen, All Teed Up to Janet Pincock and the Publishers was not struck. A pair of Twos for Shirley Carew this week and a single to Lyn Andrews rounded out the women's results.
INTERCLUB
The Top Pub sponsored interclub team travelled to Karori Golf club to play Te Marua in the first round of the promotion/relegation series for entry into Div 2 next year. Carterton had 5 frontline players missing but put up a creditable performance in going down 8.5 to 6.5 . The foursomes were lost 3 to 2 with Jason Sadler/Mark Bowden and Jeremy Ross/Ross Collings the morning winners. The singles in the afternoon were also lost 5.5 to 4.5, the winners being Jason Sadler, Alister Smith, Chris Ranish and Jeremy Ross with young Brayden Mazey getting the half point. The points were shared with the other 2 teams ( Hutt and Shandon) so Carterton is still in with a good chance. This Saturday sees the team travel to Wanuiomata to play Judgeford. All supporters most welcome.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
A frosty start last Tuesday morning signalled a lovely day as a field of 36 Vets set out on the penultimate round of the Autumn Cup. Garry Smith blazed his way to a winning stableford score of 43 points. (Now he’s another one that golfers should be wary of. Don’t play this guy for money!) Next in line were Terry Courtney on 39, then Bob Walker, Wal McKnight and Ian Brinkworth all on 38, and Keith Williams & Toby Hempleman on 37.
With one round to play in the Autumn Cup watch out for an exciting finish. Presently heading the leading bunch is Ray White with an aggregate score of 115, Wal McKnight on 112, and then Garry Smith & Max Bayliss – both on 111.
Speaking of Max Bayliss, his previous weeks effort was part of the total report apparently edited out before publication, so we’ll squeeze it in here. On Tuesday 28 April the vets played a stroke round. Max, on a 17 handicap & often thereabouts at prize time, hit a 78 off the stick which gave him a net score of 61. Wowee !! We believe this is the first time Max has broken 80 since joining the club about 7 years ago. He got top prize of course, plus a book about how the handicap system works! Nice one Max.
And the other point which missed publication was that the Vets want to record their absolute delight with the life membership award to Ken Prince. This is a thoroughly well deserved acknowledgement of Ken’s selfless & valuable contribution over many years. This column had to scold him a couple of weeks back for hogging all the top prizes on his comeback trail! But that was in jest. In more serious vein we add our applause to this decision. Quite apart from the deserved accolades, Ken is simply a bloody good bloke.
May 4th
LIFE MEMBERSHIP TO KEN PRINCE
CARTERTON GOLF CLUB AGM
As I mentioned last week, the club held its AGM last Monday and besides welcoming some new faces on to the Committee, it also rewarded one of the Club's stalwarts in Ken Prince with a Life Membership. As modest a chap as Ken is I am sure he will be embarrassed to see his name here in print but congratulations Ken and many thanks from all Club members for your tireless efforts in support of the Club. The Club would also like to welcome Graham Hutchby, Dean Schaef and Craig Wilson on to the committee and to welcome back Alan Heffer, Gordon Dragovich, Ngaire Taylor and Trevor Clayton.
SATURDAY
Saturday the Club hosted the Wellington Eagles Society and the annual running of the Murray Halberg Trust Charity day. Many thanks to Graham Howie, (pictured), for again donating his time for the running of the charity auction as well as a big thanks to all those who both donated and purchased items enabling us to raise a bit over a thousand dollars for the Murray Halberg Trust. On the Murray Halberg Trust day, Ladies play for the Renall Salver and Men play for the Workman Salver, (which can be seen behind Graham in the picture). The winners of these go on to compete in a regional playoff and this year our representatives are Ross Collings for the Men and Vicki Bain for the women, (hard luck to Anne Brewer who had the same points as Vicki but missed out on countback!)
And so to the results and beginning with the women with Vicki Bain and Anne Brewer both scoring 38 points to head the field with Pauline Craig following close behind with 37 and Shirley Carew with 35. 33 for Barbara Birchall, Molly Turner and Katie Smart with Karlini Davis and Sarah Haskell next on 32 points. Pauline Craig won the New World nearest the pin with neither the All Teed Up or the Publishers prizes being struck. As far as twos go, if I was asked who the only woman to score a two was I probably would have guessed correct as Corrie Van Zanten was the one!
In Men's division 1, Ross Collings was a clear winner with 41 points followed by David Sadler and Nigel Bailey both on 38. Les Mason and Matt Casey followed with 37 before Mark graham on 36 and Gordon Dragovich, Peter Taylor and Mike Holt all on 35. In Men's division 2, new Club Captain Dean Schaef won the countback from Les Cherry both scoring 40 points, ahead of Russ Sadler and Chris Connor on 38. Max Bayliss was next on 37 before the 36s of Bob Bentley, George Rink, Richard Chapman (where was the shout for that members draw?) and Mick Gates. I was talking to Mick just before the start of play and mentioned that you really wanted to score a two these days as the collects were often better than the competition prizes so what happens? You guessed it, only the 2 twos and Mick got one of them with Ross Collings getting the other! The Publishers went to Bob Bentley, the All Teed Up to Ray Clarke, Royal Oak to Ian Brinkworth and the Snake Eyes was not struck.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
A dozen Carterton Vets accepted an invitation from their Masterton counterparts to join them in their regular 12-hole competition played on Mondays. None of the Carterton members finished within reach of a prize. But though the scores were ho-hum the hospitality, and the quite different challenge posed by the Lansdowne course, made for an enjoyable outing.
On Tuesday 28 April a good muster of Carterton vets played a stroke round on their home course. Max Bayliss, on a 17 handicap & often thereabouts at prize time, hit a 78 off the stick which gave him a net score of 61. We believe this is the first time Max has broken 80 since joining the club about 7 years ago. He got top prize of course and a book explaining how the handicap system works. Nice one Max.
Next in line was Ian Brinkworth with a very competitive 65, then Terry Courtney (66), Mike Holt and Pat Carew on 67, Ash Braggins & Trevor Clayton both 68, Ray White (69) Toby Hempleman (70). Then just scraping in on 72, by lot, were Graham Steffert, Jim Harris and Barry Hare. The noteworthy point about this list is that there is no mention of Stewart, Rolls (the “H” one) or Prince!
Which reminds us. The vets join with other club members in congratulating Ken Prince on his appointment as a Life Member; a thoroughly well deserved acknowledgement of Ken’s selfless & valuable contribution over many years. This column had to scold him a couple of weeks back for hogging all the top prizes on his comeback trail! But that was in jest. In more serious vein we add our applause to this decision. Quite apart from the deserved accolades, Ken is simply a bloody good bloke.
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Round 2 of the Reardon Cup last week, a stableford round, and conditions must have been tough judging by the scores! Leading them in was Pam Fitzgerald on 34 points ahead of Shirley Carew on 32 and Pauline Craig and Bev Tregurtha on 31 points. All the rest of the placings scored 30 and those were Sandra Scott, Colleen Southey and Caral Rink with Pam Williams missing out on countback. Pauline Craig scored the only two this time, Colleen Southey won the All Teed Up and the New World nearest the pin was not struck.
Apr 27th
SATURDAY
Saturday the Club held its annual Anzac Day Mini Tournament and a good turnout saw one Women's division and two Men's divisions with prizes down to 12th position in all divisions! The tournament is played on Stableford and all divisions were won by scores in the mid 40s as the summer conditions continue. In the Women's division, A Watkin was the winner on 44 points from Anne Brewer on 43 and Miria Te Tau on 41 before countbacks separated those on 40 points being Margaret Bradshaw, Ngaire Taylor and Katie Smart. Men's group 1 was cleaned out by John Lett on 44 who is continuing his rich vein of form. Lance Sayer edged Lyn Evans on countback with 42 points and countback required again for the 41s being David Wills, Stu Ingham and Eric De Gans. Men's Group 2 winner was Chris Slaughter on 45 points, Trevor Clayton, Karl Churchward and Russ Sadler all scored 42 points before a number followed on 39 points. Val Willis won the nearest the pin on #6, Peter Curran on #9, K Barham on #12 and Larry Gray on #15. A few Twos were scored on the day but the Eagle on #1 from Anne Brewer had to be the best of them! Nigel Tomlin's pair of twos earns an honourable mention whilst the rest went to Warren Birdling, M Wagstaff, Les Mason, Susan and Chris Slaughter, Val Willis, Cara Rink, Ngaire Taylor and K Barham.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
The weather was a bit threatening last Tuesday when a good field of 35 Carterton vets, together with their 17 visitors from Manor Park started a round of stableford golf. In the event the showers stayed away, making for a most enjoyable day. The scoring mode was the combined total of stableford points for 2-person teams. However to add a bit of mystery, the match gurus (Bill Shakespeare/Bob Walker) came up with a beaut variation on this theme. They decided that partnerships would be decided by a blind draw for partners at the end of the round. So if a player who finished with a very good score drew a partner with a forgettable score - -“s o r r y”. At the other extreme, surprised faces were worn by a few prize-winners whose contribution to their winning partnership was clearly less than half the combined score. But did everybody have a fun day out? Based on the relaxed post-game atmosphere, they sure did. We didn’t get the full list of winners but the top five, and the combined partnership scores, were - 79 points - Nigel Graham & Warwick Wakeham (Manor Park), 77 - Russ Sadler & Ron Lukies, 76 - Chris Connor & Stan Sarek (MP), 76 – Vic Domanski & Arthur Williment (MP), 76 – Chris Slaughter & Ian Fargher (MP). Carterton Vets are scheduled to pay a return visit to Manor Park in late September
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Stableford was the name of the game again for the Women last Wednesday and winning with 43 stablefords was Pauline Craig. Robyn Hill was next on 41 points ahead of Flo Watkins and Sue Braiden on 40 points. 39 to Kathleen Gordon and Janet Pincock before Yvonne Bayliss and Ngaire Taylor on 38 and June Prince on 37. New World nearest the pin went to Kathleen Gordon and the All Teed Up to Corrie Van Zanten. Just the three Twos going to Pauline Craig, Beth Gordon and Corrie Van Zanten.
EXTRAS
Bit of late news from last week, on April 20 Lyn Andrews and her partner Fiona McBride played in the Wellington foursomes at Shandon Golf Course and won it! Congratulations to them both. Monday 27th sees the Club having its AGM so next week I should be able to provide you with any adds moves and changes on the Committee!

SATURDAY
Massive turn out in glorious weather for this year's running of the Huntley Dudson Memorial Cup. This mixed pairs best ball competition is played on PAR and this years winners made no contest of things, running away 4 shots clear of second place with their +10, well done to Miria Te Tau and Erik De Gans. Second on +6 was the team of Anne Brewer and Craig Wilson before three pairings on +5 being Sue Braiden and David Wills, Bev Tregurtha and Russ Sadler and Duncan and Janet Pincock. +4s rounded out the prize list with four teams scoring this, Pam Fitzgerald and Mark Graham, Barry Hare and Val Edwards, Ben Bailey and Katie Smart and Nadine Jansen and Nigel Bailey. The Twos in the mixed pairs comp were quite common it seems as they were scored by 6 teams being Miria and Erik, Kate and Larry, Marg and Ray, Lyn and David, Anne and Craig and also the Martins!
Those men without a female partner for the Cup also played a PAR round and some terrific scoring, (dominated yet again by the veterans!), was seen. Keith Williams was best on the day with +8 only just edging that born again golfer Ken Prince on +7. Looking out of place amongst these seniors was Fraser Smith on +6 followed by Vic Domanski and Phil Archibald also on +6. Api Rangihuna and Les Cherry were next on +5 before the +4s of Bob Bentley, Nigel Bain, Joe Skillcorn, Toby Hempleman and John Lett. Only the two Twos from this lot though and so good collects to Api and Fraser, whilst John Lett collected the Publishers, Bob Bentley the Snake Eyes, Gordon Dragovich the All Teed Up and Barry Bentley and Kate Keen shared the Royal Oak prize.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
Glorious weather again for Vets golf on Tuesday 14 April, and this was reflected in the scores.
Top scorer in the stableford round, by a clear margin, was Ken Prince with 45 points. Note this was the second time in a week he’s had a top scoring stableford round, having posted 47 points the previous Saturday. In both of those rounds Ken had gross scores in the low 80’s. Having back-to-back scores of this order is something he hasn’t done for several years. So fellow vets be warned - don’t play this guy for money! Second on 42 points was John Lett. Many Carterton golfers would agree that John has one of the best golf swings around, and that’s what makes him so consistently competitive. But this round had something a bit special too; he “hit his age” - no mean feat on a course with a medium course rating like ours. Far be it for us to publish the age of our golfers, but we can report that John’s gross score was 76. It was great to watch him put this round together. There were some others who made half-decent scores too. On 41, Keith Williams and guess-who? Yes, Neil Stewart. On 40, Nigel Graham, Tim Carr, Ray White, & Buster Juno, then a step down, with 38 points, Martin Sears, Joe Skillcorn, Max Bayliss & Geoff Rolls. Rounding out the prize list on 37 points were Garry Smith, Bill Shakespeare, Chris Williams and Wal McKnight. Next Tuesday, April 21st, the Carterton Vets are scheduled to host Manor Park.
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
The Ladies played a 4 Ball Best Ball Long/Short Drawn teams last Wednesday and a tightly fought contest appears to have been had as only 4 points separated the top four places. Out in front on their own with 53 points were Robyn Hill, Pam Fitzgerald and Lynn Morell so congratulations to them! Sharing 52 points were the next two teams comprising Barbara Birchall, Pauline Craig and Sue Braiden in one team and Margaret Bradshaw, Colleen Southey and Bev Tregurtha in the other. In fourth place on 49 points were the team of Kathleen Gordon, Kate keen and Margaret Thompson. Lesley Sadler continues her Twos form with the only Two on the day whilst Margaret Bradshaw won the All Teed Up prize and Jenny Duggan the New World nearest the pin.
JUNIOR PENNANTS
The Junior Pennants beat Featherston on Sunday 155-142. This is the first time that Featherston have been beaten this year so its a great achievement. Katie Smart once again lead to attack with a fine 46 points ably supported by Benjamin Bailey and Sarah Haskill on 37 and Brayden Mazey on 35. All but Sarah won their matches too so they did really well.
Katie and Benjamin also went to the Pahiatua Junior Open last week and Katie won the Girls Nett prize with a nett 66 while Benjamin came second in the U13 Boys Nett with nett 68. Once again representing themselves and the club well. Hopefully more success stories to follow from the Martinborough Junior Open this Tuesday....
Apr 13th
SATURDAY MEN
Third and final round of the Tararua Trophy on Saturday and making no contest of things was Colin Larsen with 89 points from his two best rounds. Scoring on Saturday was phenomenal with some astonishing totals being posted in both men's divisions. Division 1, 0-16, was taken out by Barry Bentley with no less than 46 points which on his handicap must have seen some spectacular scoring. Piri Gillies was next on 41 followed by Phil Archibald on 40 then Mark Graham and Nigel Bain on 39. And if Barry's 46 was good, in the 17 and over group Ken Prince's 47 sounds even better! Colin Larsen next with 43 closed out the Trophy as already mentioned and was followed in by Dean Schaef and Gary Dewhurst on 41 and Richard Chapman on 40. Gary also grabbed the Publishers on #6 whilst Russ Sadler grabbed the Royal Oak on #12. Snake Eyes on #10 went to Ash Braggins and the All Teed Up on #16 to T Hodgkiss. Predictably, Barry Bentley got a couple of Twos and the mere mortals with only the one each were Dean Schaef, Nigel Bain, Allan Heffer and Nigel Bailey.
SATURDAY WOMEN
Stableford for the women on Saturday too and closely contested it was as the winners were separated again by countback with Miria Te Tau getting the nod over Pauline Craig, both with 37 points. The next group all had 35 points and these were Susanne Fuller, Margaret Bradshaw, Lynn Andrews and Ngaire Taylor with Sue Braiden on 33 filling out the placings. Miria also grabbed the New World nearest the pin whilst the All Teed Up went to Sandra Gillies and the Publishers to Janet Pincock. Miria was also in the Twos action joined by both Sandra and Janet as they all showed how to convert thos3e nearest to the pin prizes!
EASTER MINI TOURNAMENT
Great turnout in beautiful conditions for the annual Easter Monday Mini Tournament. Stablefords were pretty easy to come by it would appear as scoring was yet again of a high standard. The women's division was won by Pauline Craig on 40 points from Val Edwards on 39 and Ngaire Taylor on 38. Miria Te Tau and Lesley Sadler on 36 were next, Val Willis and June Prince followed on 34 with Nadine Jansen grabbing the last prize on offer with 33. Men's Group 1 was headed by Pat Finn on 43 points but only by countback with Nigel Bailey the unlucky one pushed back to second. Phil Archibald continues his good form with 42 points, David Sadler next on 40 then Craig Andrews with 39, Barry Bentley with 38 and Fraser Smith with 37 filled out the placings. Men's Group 2 was handily won by P Woodcock who's 41 points was well clear of Chris Slaughter and George Rink on 37. All the rest were on 36 being M Pincock, Hugh Rolls, Les Cherry and Bill Shakespeare.
The spot prizes on the day were monopolised by the girls this time as Nadine Jansen took out nearest the pin on #6, Lyn Andrews nearest on #9, Lesley Sadler on #15 with Craig Wilson waving the flag for the boys, nearest on #12. Unfortunately Craig missed his putt it seems as only girls in the Twos those being Ngaire Taylor, Nadine Jansen and Lesley Sadler.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
The Carterton Vets hosted a group from Linton Camp on 7 April, with the Don Louis trophy up for grabs. The trophy is awarded to the club returning the highest average stableford score from the aggregate of all of the scorecards. Carterton were clear winners, with an average of 37.4 points to Linwood’s 34.7. This is no surprise given the following Carterton scores, which almost shut the visitors out from the prize list.
Top of the pops was that man again, Neil Stewart. His score of 48 points (not kidding, 48) caused some to consider whether he should be referred for a test sample to find out what he’s on! Could his boundless energy & highly competitive edge be due to an extract from the Patagonian Piupiu Bean some think he came across during his travels? Neil didn’t comment on that, but was heard to say “this (81 gross) is the best score I have ever had; everything just clicked”. Well done Neil.
Next best Carterton scores, way down from the winner’s scorecard but with what would normally be a competitive 43 points, were a bunch of five; Ron Lukies, Ian Brinkworth (also "best round ever"), Tim Carr, Chris Connor, and Toby Hempleman. Next was Frank Delaney (42) then Hugh Rolls & Jim Harris (41), Mike Holt , Wally McKnight & Keith Williams (40), Bill Shakespeare, Terry Courtney & Ray White on 39. And rounding out the prize list was Ray Morgan on 38 (by lot from 4 others).
As the grass gets longer and wetter, these stratospheric scores from the Vets are likely to return to earth. Watch this space...

INTERCLUB
The Interclub team, sponsored by the Greytown Hotel, convincingly won the Division three title, and with it, the prestigious Andy Shaw Trophy, when accounting for Waikanae 10 / 5 on Saturday at Waikanae. The mornings foursomes were won 4 1/2 to 1/2 with Warren Birdling and Chris Ranish leading the way with a 5/4 win over ex Wairarapa golfer Ricky Gerrand and Kelly Houghton. Warren putted so well that Chris had only three putts in 14 holes. The other foursomes winners were Jason Sadler/ Mark Bowden; Alister Smith /Fraser Smith; Lance Sayer/ Barry Bentley with Ross Collings and Brayden Mazey getting the half . The singles in the afternoon saw Captain Lance lead out with a 7/ 6 win. Warrens putter faltered but he managed a 2 /1 win as did young Brayden. Both Smiths left it until the eighteenth hole to secure their 1 up wins with Fraser accounting for Ricky Gerrand (he had a bad day at the office) and the scribe again got a half. The final score saw Carterton win the singles 5 1/2 to 4 1/2 and with the foursomes added, won the day 10 / 5. This result gave Carterton 53 points followed by Hutt on 47.5, Shandon on 44 and Waikanae trailing with 35. Carterton has now qualified to compete for promotion to the second division but as at the time of this report, both our opponents and venues are not known, but will be advised in due course.
JUNIOR PENNANTS
As mentioned last week, Trevs Sports have provided some great new shirts for our Junior Pennants team and here's the team looking rather swish! The Junior Pennants team had a good win down at Martinborough 152-143 with high stableford scores from Katie Smart (45) and Benjamin Bailey (41), whilst Sarah Haskill played some of her best golf too, to come in with 36 points and Brayden Mazey was steady if not as successful on 30 points.
SATURDAY MEN
Round Two of the Clareville Trophy saw a dearth of lower handicappers with the group split being 0-18 this week. In the 0-18 Group it was Ian Gordon again who burnt up the course ending on +6 leaving Les Mason in second on +4. The rest of the placings went to those on +3 being Piri Gillies, Steve Larsen, Phil Archibald and Mark Graham. The 19 and over group was headed by an even better round by the same obviously refreshed golfer who cleaned up the Vets a couple of weeks ago with Barry Hare on +7 just edging Frank Delaney on +6. James Morris was next on +4 before the +3s of Les Cherry, Ben Bailey and Toby Hempleman. The Royal Oak nearest the pin went to Lyn Evans, the Publishers to Trevor Clayton, All Teed Up to David Wills and Snake Eyes to Colin Larsen. Chris Connor, Lyn Evans, Piri Gillies and Ian Gordon all got Twos.
SATURDAY WOMEN
The Ladies played a Stableford round on Saturday and once again budding Junior golfer Katie Smart was to the fore with her 42 Stablefords getting her first place ahead of Susan Slaughter on 40. 37s were next to Nadine Jansen, Beth Gordon, Barbara Birchall and Marge Robson before the 36 of Val Edwards was decided best by countback before Colleen Southey and Chris Taylor. New World nearest the pin went to Shirley Carew, Publishers to Susan Slaughter and the All Teed Up was not struck. Three Twos were scored and these went to Shirley Carew, (converting her nearest the pin obviously!), and the others to Val Edwards and Marge Robson.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETERANS
On Tuesday 31 March, a good muster of 18 Vets journeyed up to the Palmerston North Golf Club for a round. Apparently, not many prize-winning scores were registered by Carterton. However one of our quiet achievers did record the days winning score of 42 stableford points. Good stuff Neil Stewart. Its no surprise that Neil can readily adapt to unfamiliar golf courses given his experiences in adapting to unusual situations & places on some of his giddying world-wide travels over recent years. Who else from Carterton figured in the money? Well that’s a bit hazy, but Garry Smith had a very commendable score of 40 points. Watch out you two. The handicap man’s gonna getcha! By the time this gets published, the Vets will have hosted members from Linton Camp, due on their annual visit Tuesday 7 April. The weather forecast is fine, and we look forward to another enjoyable encounter
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
The Coyle Cup and PAR was order of the day last Wednesday and June Prince with +4 was a clear winner. Log Jam on +2 with Shirley Carew, Nadine Jansen, Alison Bodle, Val Willis and Gay Martin all having that score. Then came the +1s with Yvonne Bayliss and Lyn Morrell before Margaret Bradshaw's all square score was decided better than those of Sue Braiden, Corrie Van Zanten and Pauline Craig. All Teed Up went to Bernice Parker and the New World nearest the pin to Jenny Duggan who also picked up a two along with Lyn Morrell who grabbed a couple!

INTERCLUB
The Carterton interclub team, sponsored by the Greytown Hotel, travelled over the hill to the Hutt Golf club on Saturday. The foursomes were lost 4 /1 with the only point gained by Lance Sayer and Nigel Bain. The singles in the afternoon were also lost 5 1/2 to 4 1/2 with the winners being Mark Bowden, Jason Walker, Lance Sayer, Warren Birdling and the scribe getting a lucky half. Carterton's lead has now been chopped to 3 1/2 points over Hutt and Shandon with the last round to be played this coming Saturday at Waikanae. Boys, keep up the practise.
SATURDAY MEN
Round 2 of the Tararua Trophy played out on Saturday and a continued good scoring is the norm. In the 0-17 group, evergreen John Lett lead the way with 42 points ahead of Nigel Bailey on 41 points. The rest of the placings went to those on 38 points being Pat Finn, Phil Archibald, Karl Churchward and Wayne Taylor. In the 18 and over group, Colin Larsen found some form to come in with a very nice 46 points which should see the handicapper licking his pencil! Next was Duncan Pincock on 42 points ahead of Graham Hutchby and Bob Bentley on 40 points and Barry Hare and Les Cherry on 39 points. Phil Archibald laid claim to the Publishers prize on #6, Steve Larsen got the Royal Oak prize on #12, Gary Dewhurst the Snake Eyes on #10 and the All Teed Up on #16 went to Stu Ingham. John Lett and Barbara Birchall both scored twos on the day as did David and Leslie Sadler ensuring some peace in Sadler household!
SATURDAY WOMEN
The Ladies played Captains Trophy, also a stableford event and a closely fought thing it was in the end with Sue Ross holding off Leslie Sadler, 43 points to 42. Lyn Andrews came in with 40 points, Chris Taylor 37 and 36s for Janet Pincock, Nadine Jansen and Barbara Birchall. The All Teed Up this week went to Lyn Andrews, the New World nearest the pin to Barbara Birchall and the Publishers to Val Willis. Four winners in the Ladies twos this week those being Leslie Sadler, Sue Ross, Barbara Birchall and Nadine Jansen.
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Bisque PAR for a change as the Ladies competed last Wednesday. Winner on the day with a creditable 8up was Robyn Hill with June Prince second on 6up and Sandra Gillies next on 5up. The rest of the placings were filled with 4ups and those went to Jenny Duggan, Barbara Birchall, Corrie Van Zanten, Margaret Bradshaw and Sue Ross. New World nearest the pin went to Margaret Thompson and the All Teed Up to Pauline Craig with the only twos going to Corrie Van Zanten and Nadine Jansen.
TWILIGHT FINAL
The final round for the Twilight Competition was played last week and appears to have been a benefit for our Junior Golfer with both the Men's and Ladies Trophies going to a couple of our Juniors The Ladies Stableford Cup Winner was Katie Smart and the Men's Stableford Cup Winner was Brayden Mazey so congratulations to those two and all the best for your golfing futures! The Braiden International Putting Cup also went to Brayden Mazey whilst the Tui Team Stableford Shield went to the team of Ben Bailey, Jamie Morris, and the organiser Les Cherry, (noting that Ben is also one of our Juniors!) Thanks to all our sponsors for another successful season of Twilight and don't forget to come along this week for the fun night for closing as the rules go out the window...
MISCELLANEOUS AND COMING UP
Couple of things to throw in here, the first being a big thanks to Trevs Sports who have provided some great new shirts for our Junior Pennants team.
Next is a bit of late news which is for the Business House Golf competition which was run over 3 nights on 3 successive weeks last month. This year a new trophy was donated by James Trucks and Machinery and the winners were Braewool Jerseys, second was Ecolab and Renall Joinery was third.
This is an important one for members as we have a change to the normal starting time on Saturday Club Day 11th April which will commence at 11.30am report in by 11am. This is to cater for a wedding which has been booked from 5.30pm and clubrooms will need to be prepared. Thanks to members for their co-operation in this matter and I will try and put in another reminder for you next week!
Mar 22nd
INTERCLUB
The Carterton interclub team hosted Shandon for the last home game on Saturday. The morning foursomes were won by Carterton 3/2. The highlight of the morning being Nigel Bain ( under huge pressure from the watching gallery) playing a fantastic lob shot to the 18th. Unfortunately his partner (and Captain) Lance missed the putt and they lost 1 down. So to the singles. Jason Walker cruised to an easy 7/ 6 win and was the catalyst for the team winning the singles 6 1/2 to 3 1/2. Other winners were Jason Sadler, Mark Bowden, Lance Sayer, Nigel Bain, Eric Collings, with Alister Smith getting a half. The final score was Carterton 9 1/2 - Shandon 5 1/2. Overall, this was a very good team effort played in fine team spirit and with the last 2 games away, has put Carterton in a strong position to take out the Andy Shaw trophy. Thanks must go to the Greytown Hotel, caterer Dean Mazey and Premier Bacon. This Saturday, Carterton is being hosted by Hutt golf club, tee off 7:30 am, all supporters most welcome.
JUNIOR PENNANTS
The Carterton Juniors hosted their Mahunga compatriots on Sunday but unfortunately came out on the losing side of the ledger 124 to 130 stablefords. Ben Bailey did well to defeat his better handicapped opposition as did Katie Smart to half her match also against a better handicapped player. Unfortunately the others went down and the difference in winning margins was enough for Mahunga to claim victory. Special thanks to Tina Bailey for stepping in at late notice to look after catering for the youngsters!
SATURDAY MEN
Round 1 of the Clareville Trophy, a PAR competition, was played on Saturday and it looks like it will be hotly contested this year with some impressive first up scores being registered. In group 1, 0-16 handicappers, Nigel Bailey and his +10 had some heads shaking one of which must have been Phil Archibald who would have been pretty happy with his +6! David Wills was next on +3, Alan Heffer, Piri Gillies and Lyn Evans were next on +2 then Stu Ingham with +1. In group 2, 17 and over handicaps, a tighter leader board occurred but still with impressive scores as Duncan Pincock's +7 edged Ian Gordon on +6. Ben Bailey on +5 headed John Braiden on +4, then Ian Brinkworth and Gary Spicer on +3 before Bob Bentley on +2. The Royal Oak nearest the pin went to Frank Delaney, the Publishers to Les Mason, Snake Eyes to Chris Connor and the All Teed Up to Matt Casey. Twos were popular especially to Lyn Evans who scored two with the rest going to Karl Churchward, Lyn Andrews, Toby Hempleman, George Rink and Denis Ebert.
SATURDAY WOMEN
The usual suspects at the top of the tree for the Ladies on Saturday with our local Wellington Rep Lyn Andrews scoring 43 Stablefords to edge out long time performer Nadine Jansen on 40 points. Lesley Sadler was next on 39 followed by Vicki Bain on 37, Shirley Carew and Val Edwards on 36 and then Barb Fitzpatrick and Corrie Van Zanten on 35. Pauline Craig took out the All Teed Up, Janet Pincock the Publishers and the New World nearest the pin was not struck. Not content with winning the stableford competition, Lyn was also the scorer of the only two with a very healthy collect!
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN
Stableford was the order of the day last Wednesday and the handicapper must be proud as the winners points were all between 35 and 37 points! Vicki Bain was the only golfer to go better than their handicap with 37 points whilst the pack on 36 comprised Kate Keen, Pam Williams, Yvonne Bayliss and Nadine Jansen with Jenny Duggan rounding out proceedings on 35 points. Jenny also grabbed the All Teed up Prize whilst Vick got the nearest the pin.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETS
Last week the Vets went over the hill (some unkindly folk think many of the vets are already there) to do battle with Te Marua Vets for a trophy the two clubs contest each year. Undeterred by a weather forecast of strong winds and occasional showers, a good muster of 23 Carterton vets made the trip. Well it was very windy but at least the rain held off until the last group were just finishing.
There’s not a lot to be said about the golf scores. Te Marua retained the trophy by a clear margin & only 2 Carterton golfers figured in the list of about ten prize winners. So well done Jim Harris and Neil Stewart for carrying the Carterton flag. The rest of us couldn’t even win any of the raffles. But the good humoured banter around the course, and in the clubhouse afterwards, marks a genuinely friendly rapport between the vets of the two clubs. Long may it continue.
COMING UP
Men have round 2 of the Tararua Trophy next Saturday whilst the Ladies have the Captains Trophy/Stubbs Cup both stableford competitions. All the best and happy golfing!
Mar 15th
SATURDAY MEN
Tararua Trophy round 1 on Saturday and some hot Stableford scoring was the order of the day. In group 1 if you didn't have 40 points you missed out as Bevan Lambess edged Craig Wilson on countback to take the honours with 42 stablefords. Next on his own and playing some good golf of late was Nigel Tomlin on 41 points before a group on 40 being Keith Williams, Dean Schaef, Nigel Bain and Phil Archibald. Group 2 saw Gary Dewhurst take advantage of being allowed out on a Saturday to win scoring 42 stablefords. Toby Hempleman was next on 41, Peter Cottier on 39, Ash Braggins and Bill Shakespeare on 38 then Colin Larsen and Gary Spicer on 37. The holes must have been bigger on Saturday as no less than 11 players scored twos! These were Larry Gray, Jason Walker, Peter Cottier, Trevor Clayton, Bill Shakespeare, Bevan Lambess, Greg Martin, Barry Bentley, Mike Newport, Lance Sayer and Craig Wilson. The Publishers was won by Jeremy Ross, the Royal Oak by Barry Bentley, The All Teed Up went to Ross Collings and the Snake Eyes was not struck.
SATURDAY WOMEN
LGU/National Teams Events are being played by the Ladies at the moment and some excellent scoring was seen on Saturday with all place getters posting sub Par Nett scores. The winner was Corrie Van Zanten on Nett 64 ahead of Val Edwards on Nett 66. Val Willis and Gay Martin both came in with Nett 67s and Margaret Bradshaw and Anne Brewer both had Nett 68s. The only Twos were scored by Corrie Van Zanten and Sue Braiden, the All Teed Up went to Lynne Morrell, the Publishers went to Vicki Bain and the New World nearest the pin to Corrie Van Zanten.
LAST WEDNESDAY'S WOMEN.
As I just mentioned, the Ladies were in the midst of LGU/National Teams Events last week and Wednesday also included a putting competition. Barbara Birchall cleared away from everyone on Wednesday with the only sub Par Nett score being a Nett 69. Bernice Parker's Par Nett score of 71 earned her second place ahead of Caral Rink and Gay Martin on Nett 72. Nadine Jansen and Corrie Van Zanten both had Nett 73 and then a group on Nett 75 comprising Shirley Carew, Sue Braiden, Margaret Bradshaw and Yvonne Bayliss. Caral Rink won the Putting comp on the day, Barbara Birchall scored the only Two, Yvonne Bayliss won the nearest the pin prize and the All Teed Up went to Pam Fitzgerald.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETS
One of the club’s stalwarts took the top honours when the vets played a Stroke round on Tuesday 10 March. Hugh Rolls, who knows every crook and nanny nook & cranny of the course, hit an unbeatable 65 net. Next with net scores of 66 were Martin Sears & Ari van Zanten. followed by Terry Courtney on 67, Ron Lukies on 68, and Russ Sadler, 69. Then a group of four on net 70 – Garry Smith, Cyril Burling (welcome back Cyril), John Lett and Tim Carr – followed by three who played to their handicap hitting net 71s; Dick Hymers, Pat Carew and Bill Shakespeare. (Don’t know how Bill got on the podium. He’s usually too pre-occupied organising, arranging and managing the vets to have time to hit a good score as well!) Finally, a warm welcome to new member John Duggan.
Reminders/Changes. Vets had no organised golf on Tuesday 17 March. Instead they’ll get their weekly golf-fix at Te Marua on Thursday 19th March. And the 2nd round of the Autumn Cup, in the program for 24 March, has been re-scheduled for 14 April, with the final two rounds now set down for 5 and 12 May.
Late newsflash. Hugh Rolls, already established as this week’s top scoring vet, added to his top-gun reputation with a hole-in-one during Friday’s 11’s round. Hugh scored his ace on the par 3 15th (stableford score was 1 for 5 !). However, the remainder of his round must have been pretty ordinary as he only had 23 points total. Ahead of him for the Friday short course contest were John Lett on top with 29 points, Bevan Lambess, Mike Newport & Chris Slaughter all on 26, Pat Carew & Chris Connor on 25, and then Hugh.
COMING UP
Next Saturday has the Carterton Interclub team hosting their compatriots from Shandon, all the best guys for your continued good form! The Men have round one of the Clareville trophy a Par round and the Women I believe are playing stableford. Here's to the continued good golfing conditions and the wonderful state it has allowed the course to be presented in!
Mar 8th
I'll begin this week with last week and let you know the piece of news missing! I had the winner for the Men's Broadbent Cup but had not been provided with the winner of the Ladies and so I can now let you know that is was Lyn Andrews! Congratulations Lyn and keep up the great golfing!
SATURDAY
As I said last week the course was closed for the Lower North Island triangular tournament, so Carterton members were invited to Masterton for the day. Have not heard how things went so look forward to seeing the Masterton report to find out how many of our members names show up!
LAST WEDNESDAY"S WOMEN.
The Ladies played a Captains Trophy / Gaille Jury Cup Stableford round last week and a good turnout saw Marge Robson come home the winner on 42 points, closely followed by Gay Martin on 40. Next was Lesley Sadler and Jenny Dugan on 38, Val Willis on 37 and the trio of Ngaire Taylor, Bernice Parker and Yvonne Bayliss on 36 points. Only the two 2s were scored, by Vicki Bain and Jenny Duggan so nice collects for those two, Sue Braden grabbed the All teed Up and Gay Martin the New World Nearest the Pin.
LAST TUESDAY'S VETS
On Tuesday last week the Vets played the first round of the Autumn Cup. The competition for this trophy is played over 4 rounds, with the winner being the golfer who aggregates the most stableford points for any 3 of those 4 rounds. The benign weather conditions and a course in great shape for this time of the year signalled some good scoring. And so it proved, with “Gentleman Jim” Douglas top of the list on 45 points (yes, forty five; not a misprint) About a street away were Mike Holt and Ray White - both with a very commendable 41 points. Next best, on 40, were Russ Sadler and Barry Hare. Then there were four with 39 points followed by a bunch who scored 36 (played to their handicap) or better. So congratulations Jimmy, but watch out. There’s a sizable chasing pack still within reach!
Round 2 of the Autumn Cup is scheduled for 24th March.
On a lighter note, Tim has now explained to the vets why their results are always a week late, (publishing deadlines), but he did point out that as their memory lapses get more frequent an 8 day delay will be just like breaking news!
COMING UP
The Men have Round 1 of the Tararua Trophy this Saturday, a stableford competition whilst the Ladies have National teams Events. Sunday sees the second round of the Marquis Shield being played in Martinborough so good luck to all involved.
Mar 1st
MARQUIS SHEILD
Carterton hosted round One of the WBS Marquis Shield and I'm pleased to say that Carterton beat their first round opponents, Masterton, 8.5 to 3.5. Things get tougher from here though as we now go on the road and start to play on the other courses, starting with Martinborough in a fortnights time.
SATURDAY MEN
Another one for the Ducks on Saturday but this didn't stop a few hardy souls from competing for the Broadbent Cup! This year the trophy was shared by Trevor Clayton and Graham Hutchby. Graham's steady as you goes scoring and Trevor's flash in the pan followed by a flash out of the pan shows how both techniques have merit! Best on the day for Saturday was a visitor from Featherston, Brian Russo on a very fine nett 65, obviously the conditions were suitable for someone from the lee of the Tararuas! Next in was Graham Hutchby on nett 70, edging Nigel Bailey on nett 71 and Alan Heffer on nett 72. Steve Larsen was next on nett 73, brother Colin on nett 74 and then Trevor Clayton with nett 75. Colin Larsen was the most prolific collector on the day getting both the Publisher's on #6 and the Royal Oak on #15, John Lett won the All Teed Up and the Snake Eyes was not struck. Brian Russo had the only two and would have headed home much the happier for it!
SATURDAY WOMEN
The conditions kept most of the ladies at home but four of them turned up and so all of them get a mention! Lyn Andrews played well for the handicapper with 37 points to take out first place ahead of Sue Braiden on 31 points, (at least you won a raffle Sue!). Barbara Birchall was next on 29 points and then Corrie Van Zanten on 25.
LAST TUESDAY VETS
Welcome on board to Tim Carr who will be providing us with the results for the Carterton Veterans this year!
Last Tuesday the vets played a drawn pairs Ambrose for the Graham Parker memorial trophy. The day’s competition was won by the pairing of Jason Walker and Dean Schaef with a net 61. While these young fellas had the best score, they are non vets & therefore ineligible for the trophy. That honour went to Pat Carew and Dick Hymers who carded the top score from the vets pairings, a net 62. They were closely followed on 63 net by Keith Rayner & Jack Jones, and Frank Delany & Wal McKnight. Next on 66 was the pair of Jim Harris & Toby Hempleman, followed by Russ Sadler & Vic Domanski heading a group on net 67.
COMING UP
Next Saturday and Sunday the course is closed for the Lower North Island Triangular with some of the top golfers from the Wellington, Hawkes Bay and Wanganui areas competing. For Carterton club players, Masterton have kindly invited us up for the day for a friendly competition. Please turn up at the Lansdowne course by 11:30 am to register.

Carterton hosted Hutt Golf Club on saturday in wet but warm conditions. With Captain Lance Sayer partnering Nigel Bain leading the way with a 5/4 win in the mornings foursomes, Carterton led 4 1/2 to 1/2 going into lunch. Other winners in the morning were Jason Sadler/ Mark Bowden, Chris Ranish/Warren Birdling and Bevan Lambess/ Braiden Mazey. The afternoon singles reflected the morning score. Lance demolished his opponent 8/7, and then proceded to fire up the rest of the team to win the singles 6 1/2 to 3 1/2. Braiden won 4/2, Bevan ground out a good half against a 1 handicapper, Jason won 3/2, Mark won 5/3, Jason Walker beat Tai Walters 5/3 and Chris won 1up. Unlucky losers were Warren, Alister Smith and Nigel. The final score of 11 / 4 has Carterton in 2nd place with three rounds to go. Carterton hosts Shandon on 21 March so keep the practice up team. Thanks go to the Greytown Hotel, Premier Bacon, the Mazey family and Tony and Kyle.
SATURDAY MEN
Round 1 of the Broadbent Cup played on Stroke and a few players were obviously keen to get their Shootout scores in early! Only the single Division in the Men's this week as the course was shared with the Interclub boys and numbers were a little down on usual. Leading the pack in was Trevor Clayton with a fine Nett 66 ahead of Pat Carew on net 68 and Godfrey Bowden on Nett 69. Dean Schaef and Duncan Pincock were next on Nett 70 before the accurately handicapped group on Nett 71 being Ray Clarke, Lyn Evans, Graham Hutchby, John Braiden and Peter Cottier. Good payout in the twos comp this week and the beneficiaries of that were Nigel Bailey, Jeanne Taylor, Pat Carew, John Braiden and Trevor Clayton. Publishers on #6 went to Pat Carew, Royal Oak on #12 to David Sadler, Snake Eyes on #10 to Graham Hutchby and the All Teed Up on #16 to Ray Clarke.
SATURDAY WOMEN
Round 1 of the Broadbent Cup here as well but played on Stableford and the scoring was a bit subdued. Regular Rep golfer Lyn Andrews was best on the day with 37 points followed in by Gay Martin on 34 points and Jeanne Taylor and Barbara Birchall both on 33. 32s for Corrie Van Zanten and Marge Robson before the 30s of Shirley Carew, Pauline Craig, Val Edwards and Beth Gordon. Lyn Andrews grabbed a couple of twos whilst Jeanne Taylor, Barbara Birchall, Val Edwards and Sue Braiden grabbed one each. Jeanne Taylor completed a nice day of collects with the New World's nearest the pin, whilst Janet Pincock won the All Teed Up and Lyn Andrews the Publishers on #6 also having a good all round day.
WEDNESDAY WOMEN
Stablefords again, but this time for the Reardon Cup with results being better than those on Saturday! Robyn Hill has set the early pace in this trophy with her 41 points giving her a 2 point buffer. 39 points was popular with Sue Braiden, Beth Gordon, Bev Tregurtha and Lesley Sadler all sharing that score ahead of Ngaire Taylor and Alison Bodle on 38. Just the 3 Twos were scored and they were by Suzanne Fuller, Sandra Gillies and Pauline Craig and the nearest the pin prize for Group 3 went to Jenny Duggan.

WALKER RUNS OVER OPPONENT
INTERCLUB
Jason Walker played superb under par golf in cold and windy conditions to thrash his Shandon Golf club opponent 6/5 on Saturday, but unfortunately, the Interclub team were beaten 8.5 to 6.5. The foursomes were won in the morning 3/2 ,but were beaten in the singles 6.5 to 3.5 in the afternoon. The other singles winners were Warren Birdling and Mark Bowden with Eric Collings providing the halved match. This Saturday Carterton host Hutt Golf club. This should be an interesting contest as the Hutt team are leading the competition after the second round. Club members are invited to come and support the team as they battle it out.
SATURDAY
Saturday's Men's competition was a Stroke round and continuing the low scoring theme of the past weeks, some very good scores were again posted. In the 0-17 group it was Max Bayliss who led the way on Nett 64, well clear of the Nett 67 of Wayne Taylor. Stu Ingham and Keith Williams both notched Nett 68s and then there were the Nett 69s of Barry Bentley, David Sadler and Steve Larsen. In the 18 and over group we had another Nett 64 but this time to Larry Gray which was just enough to keep him ahead of last weeks runaway winner Ian Gordon who's Nett 65 must be indicating a certain amount of his special vitamins must still be flowing around in his system! Following these two was Vic Domanski on Nett 67, then Ian Brinkworth, Chris Connor, and Ben Bailey on Nett 68, before we then got to the only honest golfer on the day to get a placing in Graham Hutchby on Nett 71. Twos were scored by Colin Larsen, Stu Ingham, Joe Skilcorn, Wayne Taylor, Larry Gray and Pat Carew. The Publishers on #6 went to Keith Williams, the Royal Oak on #15 to Pat Carew, All Teed Up on #16 to Martin Sears and the Snake Eyes on #10 to Ben Bailey. The Putting Tankard was also up for grabs on Saturday and Vic Domanski took this away with a very fine 25 putts for his round.
The Ladies played round 1 of the Robson Cup, LGU and putting on Saturday and Lesley Sadler on Nett 68 held on to win. Yvonne Bayliss and Jeanne Taylor were close behind on Nett 69, Sue Braiden and Chris Taylor followed on Nett 71 ahead of the Nett 72s of Pauline Craig, Val Willis and Pam Williams. New World Nearest the pin on #15 went to Miria Te Tau and the Publishers on #6 to Jeanne Taylor. No Twos were scored and so winners were drawn by lot and these were Jeanne Taylor, Beth Gordon, Chris Taylor, Val Willis, Bernice Parker and Lesley Sadler. The Putting Tankard was also up for grabs in the Ladies group and Marge Robson's 27 putts was good enough to win this.
WOMEN
Wednesday was round 1 of the Amy Goodin Midweek Cup and Putting and the scoring here was terrific with all 12 players mentioned in dispatches playing under Nett PAR! There has to be a winner in these things and on this occasion Ngaire Taylor edged Beth Gordon with both players scoring Nett 64. Gay Martin was next on Nett 65 ahead of Mary Edwards on Nett 66 and Kathleen Gordon and Lesley Sadler on Nett 67. Nett 68 for Sandra Scott and Pauline Craig, before we get to the Nett 69s of Sandra Gillies, June Prince, Bernice Parker and Val Willis. Shirley Carew took out the putting on count back from Corrie Van Zanten, both players having 28 putts. June Prince got the nearest the pin prize, Pauline Craig the All Teed Up and twos were scored by Bev Tregurtha, Ngaire Taylor and Sue Braiden grabbed a brace!
COMING UP
Time is running out for Men to enter their pairs in for this years Steel Cup Competition so please have a look at the board in the dressing rooms. Feb 9th
The soaring temperatures were exceeded by some soaring stableford scores the weekend! First a small apology for the error in last weeks report with Premier Bacon suffering a temporary relocation to Greytown! We do know its home is here in Carterton and Chris and I feel much better that you all know now too!
OPENING DAY
Saturday's opening Season Opening was begun with the traditional first tee off by the Club President, and David Wills showed the way down the centre of the fairway. A large number of us chose to play in a more sun smart fashion and kept under the trees for the day! The WJ Feast Memorial Trophy was up for grabs, played in Mixed Foursomes Canadian Stableford, and after some wise words from Alan Heffer our Club Captain, regarding the heat and keeping hydrated we took to the course! This years winners by a good margin were Miria Te Tau and Phil Archibald with 43 stablefords. In the men's division, Ian Gordon may have to suffer some jibes over the next few weeks as his 47 points would seem to indicate the use of game enhancing additives! Unfortunately I do not have the rest of the results of Saturday in front of me but congrats to all who did okay and commiserations to those who did not! Welcome back to the usual suspects in the hole sponsorships, The Publishers Arms, All Teed Up and Snake Eyes, and Welcome on board to the Royal Tavern!
WAITANGI DAY
Another good turnout for this popular Mini tournament and once again good conditions meant good scoring!
The Ladies group was led in by Bev Todd with 41 points, well ahead of the rest all on 37 being Lesley Sadler, Anne Brewer, Ngaire Taylor and Val Edwards. Men's group 1 was headed by our President, David Wills, scoring 42 points to just edge Martin Sears on 41. Feb 2nd
Hi all and welcome back to the weekly Carterton Golf club news report. The end of the Summer Cup for 2008 and next Saturday sees the opening of the 2009 season, hasn’t time flown! I hope the holiday season was a safe and enjoyable one for you all and may this years golfing be a continuation of the same!
INTERCLUB
This years reports sees a new face with Chris Ranish providing me with regular updates on our illustrious Interclub team, welcome aboard Chris! The Carterton Golf Club Interclub team plays in the Wellington golf Association 36 hole Division 3 (Andy Shaw Trophy) and is sponsored by the Green Man Hotel in Greytown. Saturday they hosted Waikanae who on paper appeared to be the stronger of the two teams but results proved otherwise. The morning foursomes provided a 4/1 win to Carterton with that well known pairing of Birdling and Ranish showing how golf should not be played !!! (sure I saw them out practising the following morning…) The singles in the afternoon, played in extremely hot and humid conditions, showed that Carterton will be a force to be reckoned with. The singles were won 6 1/2 / 3 1/2 giving a total score of 10 1/2 4 1/2 , the highlight of the singles being Fraser Smith, playing under the card, to demolish Ricky Gerrand. Thanks to Tony and Kyle for a great course presentation and to Premier Bacon of Greytown for supplying the ham for lunch. The next game, Carterton is away to Shandon on 14 February .
SUMMER CUP
The last of the Summer Cup rounds was played in Saturday and another scorcher it was! The Summer Cup is played as a best 3 of 5 round stableford Aggregate and congratulations to this years winners. The Ladies winner was Kate Keen with an aggregate of 113 points and the Men's winner was Greg Martin with a mammoth 125 points! (getting the hang of our NZ greens now Greg?) Thanks must go to Lyle and the team at the Publisher for maintaining their sponsorship through the summer season and again to Tony and Kyle who have done a great job in the dry conditions to keep the course in such great form.
COMING UP
As I mentioned earlier, it’s the opening day of the 2009 season on Saturday so lets see you all along to drive the season off in style! The WJ Feast Memorial Trophy is up for grabs, played as a Mixed Canadian Foursomes, with the rest of the field playing a stableford round.
